Investment Program Leads to EDM Installations at COM DEV

Three years ago, Cambridge, ON-based COM DEV Ltd. decided to upgrade its equipment and technology and embarked on a significant capital investment program that included the recent installation of two new Mitsubishi EA12V die sink EDMs.

“Three years ago our equipment was all very old and at that point there was a question whether we wanted a full-fledged machine shop or just a repair facility. Subsequently, the decision was made that we did need a full machine shop and during the past three years we’ve spent close to $11 million including a new building and new equipment,” says Phil Young, EDM group lead, with COM DEV.

COM DEV, which began operations in 1974, designs and manufactures space hardware subsystems that are sold to major satellite prime contractors for use in communications, space science, remote sensing and military satellites. The company’s 240,000 sq. ft. facility in Cambridge provides an extensive variety of services including systems engineering and analysis; applications of RF and microwave technology for remote sensing; high power RF microwave design and testing; and more.
