Matching drive to motor is essential to gain the best combination of torque, speed, and efficiency. Drives & Power Products Group The ACS 160 drive from ABB is designed as a modular unit for both wall-mount and IEC motor-mount installations. The NEMA-4X (IP65) micro drive is suited for applications that require reliable, efficient motor operation in hazardous or wash-down environments. It responds to input signal changes in as little as 5 msec, covers a 0.5 to 3-hp range, and an input voltage range of 380 to 500 Vac three phase. The rotor and stator work through magnetic interaction. The number of poles and applied frequency determine speed. A drive provides many different frequency outputs. Any given frequency output of the drive produces a unique torque curve. The drive's control board signals control circuits to turn on the waveform positive or negative half of the power device. Alternating positive and negative switches recreates the three-phase output. The longer the power device remains on, the higher the output voltage. The longer it is off, the lower the output frequency. The drive output is not an exact replica of the ac input sine waveform. Instead, it provides constant magnitude voltage pulses. All PWM drives contain an input converter, dc bus, and output inverter. For simplicity, only one phase of input and output are shown for a 3-phase drive. Selecting the right drive is essential to getting the best performance and efficiency from an electric motor. A motor drive controls the speed, torque, direction, and resulting horsepower of a motor. Dc drives typically control a shunt-wound dc motor, which has separate armature and field circuits. Ac drives control ac-induction motors and, like their dc counterparts, control speed, torque, and horsepower. For instance, take a simple application of a fixed-speed motor driving a fan. Replacing a three-phase motor starter with variablefrequency drive (VFD) permits the fan to operate at variable speeds. One benefit is energy savings,
