Bye-bye motion board

ServoWire SM drives offer a wide range of output power from 600 to 15,000 W with continuous output currents from 2.4 to 60-A rms/phase. Together with standard motors, continuous stall torques range from 3 to 665 lb-in. A typical Soft Motion system links servodrives with a central PC via a FireWire network connection. Application programs written in C run on the PC main processor. Motion software generates real-time motion trajectory commands, which pass to servodrives over a FireWire network at 200 Mbits/sec. The network eliminates the need for breakout boards and the 10 to 25 connections required per axis. PC-based motion control has evolved quite a bit since the first IBM PC. Today, the combination of faster processors, open networking standards such as IEEE-1394 (FireWire), and object-oriented motion programming is again changing the motion-control landscape.
