From World Lasers, Inc.
Copper is a versatile material and one of the best known conductors of heat and electricity. It has many applications but its properties make it ideal for use in the electronics industry, for flexible circuits, battery contacts and solar cells. Spot welding copper has always been a very challenging application for lasers especially at the near infra red wavelength.
A series of small spot welds were made using 170W CW and a weld time of 0.1s to weld two pieces of 0.1 mm thick copper together.
The concentric rings visible on these samples confirm that the high power density of the fiber laser is required to couple into and melt the copper efficiently. The high quality of the spot welds is confirmed by figures 1 & 2 that show the upper and lower surfaces of the spot welds.
