A special thread form keeps bolts and nuts tight under vibration by attacking the problem from a different angle. A photoelastic image of the Spiralock 30° wedge ramp (right) shows loads are evenly distributed among engaged threads. The first two threads on a conventional fastener (left) may carry as much as 80% of the load, enough to cause shearing or stripping. Spiralock 1/4-28 tapped holes are used in mounts for AIM-120 AMRAAM airtoair missiles on F-18 Hornet fighter aircraft. Spiralock threads more evenly distribute loads across engaged threads. Standard 60° threads have a larger surface contact area. This makes the first few engaged threads bear most of the applied load. Two conventional methods for securing threaded fasteners against preload loss include locking and single-use drypatch adhesives. But thread adhesives are temperature limited and cumbersome to deal with in production and during maintenance. The reason such measures are needed in the first place is the thread form itself. A standard 60° thread form leaves a gap

Screws

A screw is a wide-encompassing type of hardware fastener that attributes its mechanical capabilities to the helical groove that extends around the circumference of the device's shank. These threads provide the friction and traction that serves a screw's purpose: to assemble or position two workpieces in relation to each other. While used synonymously, screws and bolts are not mechanical clones.

Thread Rolling Dies
Thread rolling dies are used to cold-form external threads or splines by pressing a hardened die into a rotating workpiece. Thread rolling produces stronger threads than those machined with a cutting tool and is generally less expensive.
Thread Rolling Machines
Thread rolling machines generate threads by displacing and flowing metal into a thread shape.
Bolts
A bolt is a type of threaded hardware fastener that is used to position two workpieces in specific relation to each other. A bolt is specifically designed to be used with a mating, internally threaded hole or nut, which will maintain the bolt's alignment as well as the material's position on the bolt. While used synonymously, screws and bolts are not mechanical clones.
Threaded Inserts
Threaded inserts are blocks of material with a threaded hole that are pressed or molded into a part, usually made of a different material.
