The largest proving ground in North America, the Caterpillar Tucson Proving Ground, was completely off grid and relied 24 hours a day, seven days a week on three Cat® C15 diesel generator sets to power the facility. In 2016, Caterpillar decided to use the location to demonstrate the real-world value of its microgrid technology. Given that solar energy has become a cost-effective energy choice, Caterpillar installed a 500 kW solar array and energy storage system at its Tucson Proving Ground. The integrated system is expected to reduce fuel consumption by 33 percent. Providing electrical generation to remote areas is being transformed through projects such as the West Kimberley Power Project (WKPP) in Western Australia. As the largest power plant in the West Kimberley region, the Broome Power Station runs on 17 Cat® G3520C gas-fueled generator sets, each with a capacity of 2 MW. Commencing operations in 2008, the project consists of five power stations, four fueled by Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), produced at a 200-tonne-a-day LNG plant that has its own dedicated transportation infrastructure. The project is structured as a 20-year power purchase agreement between Energy Developments Limited and Horizon Power, the government-owned regional power company. Energy Developments is an international provider of remote and clean energy that minimizes greenhouse gas emissions. Combined Heat and Power: University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Medical Center. The medical center added a G3516H as its prime source of power.
