There are several problems in test sieving caused by special characteristics of some materials.
If the material is subject to static-electricity charges, the particles are prone to stick together and not pass through the proper openings. Other characteristics cause agglomeration - or a clustering together - of particles, which constrain particles from breaking apart as they are passing through proper openings. There is a third problem of separating the particles so they can pass through the proper openings: that is the problem of individual particles sticking together.
A process called wet sieving can be used to solve most of these problems. The sample is suspended in an aqueous solution which negates the static charges, breaks down the agglomeration, and lubricates near-sized particle.
This solution is washed trough high-walled sieves of appropriate openings. The residue on each sieve is oven dried, then reweighed to get the separations and calculate the particle size distribution.
We offer 8 inch diameter (and equivalent 200mm) sieves for this purpose with brass or stainless steel frames. These sieves are available in 4 inch and 8 inch depths and have mesh sizes from 20 microns to 5 inches.
