THIN FILM TEFLON ® AND PTFE
Film is available in thicknesses from one mil (.001") up to 20 mils (.020"). Because Fluoro-Plastics uses the most modern skiving technology in the world, interim thicknesses are available; widths from ½" to 60 inches are available in long lengths.
Thin film is a versatile, unsupported hydrophobic membrane with broad chemical compatibility. It is compatible with various sterilizing methods (to 500 deg F, or 234 deg C). For these reasons it is extensively used as a barrier film in many applications.
Thin film is widely used in the wire and cable industry as wrap because of its extraordinary insulating ability. Some specialty PTFE resins can be made into thin film with a breakdown voltage of over 1000 volts per mil.
Thin film meets the performance properties stated in ASTM D 3308.

Applications of PTFE
PTFE is used extensively in many differentindustries:
Petrochemical and chemical processing: PTFE is the material of choice for gaskets, vessel linings, pumpinteriors, washers, rings, seals, spacers, dip tubes and well-drillingcomponents because it is corrosion resistant and chemically inert;it is unaffected by virtually all acids and caustics and functionsin environments to 500 degrees F..
Electrical applications: PTFE isone of the best insulators known. In thin sections, it will insulateto 500 volts per mil. There are grades of PTFE which have even greaterdielectric strength. It is frequently used in wire and cable wrap,and to separate conductive surfaces in capacitors. Thick walledclose-tolerance extruded tubing is the PTFE shape of choice wheremachining or drilling long lengths to close tolerances is impossible.Multi-hole tubing can be extruded. PTFE can be machined into standoffinsulators, and many different types of high voltage encapsulationdevices for electrical components.
Semi-Conductor Industry: PTFE isinert, and its operating temperature range is from minus 350 degreesFahrenheit to 550 degrees Fahrenheit. When made to ultra pure standardsit is the material of choice for various items used in chip manufacturing,including encapsulation devices for quartz heaters, and the like.
Food, Beverage and Pharmaceutical industries: Virgin PTFE is approved by the Food and Drug Administration foruse in the food, beverage, cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries.Thin Film and sheets make an inert, no-toxic slide surface withoutmicroscopic depressions where microbes can grow. Conveyancing components- profiles, guide rails and slides - can withstand high temperaturesinside baking and drying ovens and other heated segments of thefood, cosmetics or pharmaceuticals manufacturing processes.
Laboratory applications: PTFE piping,tubing and vessels are used in various laboratory ware because oftheir chemical resistance, and inertness. No contaminants adhereto the surface.
