If you’re a food processor and you’re in California, you might be trying to find ways to comply with SB1383, GHG emissions reduction and disclosure laws, and an ever-growing number of other regulations.

1. More energy-efficient operation

RENU combines drying and milling into a single, ultra-fast operation, reducing drying and milling time from hours or even days with conventional equipment to mere seconds. Because of this, it uses less energy overall (as low as 200 kw/hr at 20 lbs/min infeed). In addition, RENU is 100% electric so you can avoid shut-downs due to natural gas limitations.

2. Reduce and upcycle organic waste

SB1383 has made organic waste disposal a challenge. But much of that “waste” that is currently going to livestock feed or biodigesters is often the most nutritious part of the fruit or vegetable: the pulp, peels, stems, and seeds. These nutrients could be valorized if converted into a shelf-stable form. Unfortunately, there has not been a cost-effective way to do this... until now.

With RENU, these side streams can be transformed into high value powders to be reintegrated into processors’ existing products or sold for other applications such as food ingredients, beverages, pet foods, and bioplastics. This transformation propels food waste into the EPA’s “most preferred” method of handling.  

3. Lower GHG emissions

As mentioned above, our energy-efficient system produces fewer GHGs than traditional drying and milling equipment. But there are other ways RENU helps you you decarbonize:

  • By upcycling organic waste, you can produce carbon credits to offset other parts of your business or to sell on the open market.  
  • Because the RENU System is designed in a compact footprint (a single system is under 1,000 sq ft) is installed on-site in your facility, you drastically reduce emissions (and costs) associated with transporting heavy, moisture-laden foods to another location for disposal. The powders generated with RENU have up to 90% less weight and volume than fresh. And even if they do end up in a landfill, powders are inert and will not generate GHGs.
