- Creating a Strong Magnetic Field (B0):
A large superconducting magnet generates a strong, uniform static magnetic field (1.5-3 Tesla). Aligns the magnetic moments of hydrogen nuclei (protons) in the body.
- RF Pulses and Resonance: Emit radiofrequency pulses at the Larmor frequency. Disturb the alignment of protons, creating transverse magnetization.
- Relaxation and Signal Detection:
Protons return to equilibrium aligned with B0, involving T1 and T2 relaxation. RF coils detect the emitted signal during this process (free induction decay, FID).
- Spatial Encoding:
Generate small, varying magnetic fields superimposed on the main field. Spatially encode the signal by varying the magnetic field strength, determining the signal's origin.
- Image Reconstruction:
Detected signals are processed and transformed into high-resolution images using Fourier transformation.
