Smart community is an attempt to construct future connected life by developing concerning smart infrastructures in the target area. It puts an emphasis on services for residents. It includes and integrates the hot issues, such as smart energy, smart mobility, smart government. In this talk, smart community projects, conducted by the speaker, were explained as case studies. Smart Island Project in Goto Island, Nagasaki introduced 150 EVs to a small island and integrated the information of ITS and power grid to achieve effective EV charging and future-oriented resort island. Smar City Project in Kurihara City, Miyagi integrated the infrastructure of energy, agriculture, healthcare, disaster defense, climate change, and communication. All concerning information was assembled in a database and changed as local services. Smart Town Project in Kawasaki City and Saitama City aims to use anonymized data in providing local services. Based on these case studies, the talk will give directions of the way to construct a smart community, to providing smart services, and to preserve privacy. Moreover, the concept of required information infrastructure will be clearly given on the basis of the directions.


Hiroaki Nishi

Hiroaki Nishi received his B.E., M.E., and Ph.D. degrees from Keio University, Japan, in 1994, 1996, and 1999, respectively. He has been selected as fellowships from Japan Society for Promotion of Science from 1996 to 1999. He was a researcher in Real World Computing Partnership from in 1999 and researched high-performance network for cluster computers. Since 2002, he was a researcher at the Central Research Laboratory, Network Platform Department, Hitachi Ltd., when he led new generation backbone router project. He was Lecturer and Assistant Professor in Department of System Design Engineering, Keio University in 2003 and 2006, respectively. He was Associate Professor of Keio University since 2007 and Visiting Associate Professor of National Institute of Informatics (NII) since 2010. Now, he is Professor of Keio University and Visiting Professor of National Institute of Informatics since 2014. He is a member of IEEE-SA Smart Grid Vision Project, IEEE802.3, IEEE2030, respectively. He is also the member of ACM, ITU-T Focus Group on Smart Sustainable Cities WG2, other Japanese Academic Societies. He was the smart energy working group chief of Nagasaki EV&ITS project, Japan. He has been a member of several committees, established by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications. He is a sub-chief editor of Smart Grid News Letter of Impress Co. Ltd, and he published several books about the standards and his conducted demonstrations. He is a chair of Smart Community Implementation Committee of Kawasaki City, Musashikosugi Area since 2013 and a chair of Smart City Exploratory Committee of Nasushiobara City. He is also chair of Smart Community Implementation Committee of Saitama City, Urawamisono Area. According to these contributions of smart communities, he is a member or a chief of several committees of the government and ministries, such as MIC, MILT, MOE, METI, and NEDO. The main theme of his current research is in building of the total network system including development of hardware and software architecture. In particular, service-oriented router and smart grid/community are the center of his research topics of demonstrations. He places importance on considering what is required for the highly-networked information society in the future from the viewpoint of these applications. He researches the next generation IP router architecture, deep network stream inspection and network-oriented services on a router, and effective network and control systems in smart grid/community. He is leading several national project of Building Energy Management Systems, Home Energy Management Systems, and Smart City/Communities.
