Several service sections of the new 2015 ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (2015 ASME BPVC) provides rules on welding, brazing, brazed joint or weld qualification, welding procedure specification, NDT weld inspection, welder qualification and welding materials specifications.

Assuring the production of high integrity welds or brazed joints on boilers, pressures vessels and pressure equipment components is an important aspect of boiler and pressure vessel construction.  Three sections of the new 2015 ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (2015 ASME BPVC) provide rules or critical guidance on joining and welding boilers, pressures and pressure equipment components.

2015 SME BPVC-V   SECTION V - NONDESTRUCTIVE EXAMINATION

Welding dramatically changes the microstructure of the steel or other metal alloys. Welding transforms steel with a wrought, homogeneous state is transformed to a solidified, columnar structure in the weld zone and a recrystallized structure in the surrounding heat affected zone (HAZ). The ASME BPVC-IX Section of the 2015 ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code provides rules on preparing WPS, PQR, SWPS, WPQ and WOPQ documents. The weld procedures specification (WPS) document defines proper welding electrodes, weld speed, welding current, pre-heat and other essential weld variables. If the weld procedure specification is not followed, then a defective weld or braze joint with unacceptable levels of porosity or cracks can result. Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) must be developed and then qualified. During the development of the WPS, a Procedure Qualification Record (PQR) is used to qualify the WPS.  Welder personnel must also be qualified using a Welder Performance Qualification (WPQ) or Welding Operator Performance Qualification (WOPQ) document. In addition, manufacturers, contractors or sub-contractors are required to adopt Standard Welding Procedure Specifications (SWPS).

2015 ASME BPVC-II C - SECTION II: MATERIALS - PART C - SPECIFICATIONS FOR WELDING RODS, ELECTRODES, AND FILLER METALS

 ASME BPVC-II C - SECTION II: MATERIALS -C provides welding alloy material specifications for safety in the field of pressure equipment. Section II Part C covers welding rods, weld electrodes, braze and other filler metals.  The material specifications in SECTION II: MATERIALS -C contain requirements for chemical composition, mechanical properties, heat treatment, manufacturing process, heat analysis, product analysis and methods of testing. Assuring quality of the raw material used during the welding process is essential in the production of good welds. Proper storage under dry conditions is another important factor.

ASME BPVC-V   SECTION V - NONDESTRUCTIVE EXAMINATION

SECTION V of the 2015 ASME BPVC  provides the requirements and methods for nondestructive testing, which are referenced in many other sections of the 2015 ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code. Service Section V includes manufacturer’s examination responsibilities, duties of authorized inspectors, NDT inspector qualification requirements, and inspection or examination requirements. Nondestructive examination is used to detect surface and internal discontinuities (pores, inclusions) in materials, welds, braze joints and fabricated parts or assemblies.
