Spacers are washers with lengths or thicknesses specific to the given application. A spacer can be used in place of a washer to keep the fastening from becoming undone or to mark a critical component. Using washers for positioning is a temporary solution; washers are often replaced by spacers in the final application. Precision spacers can be selected from metal, non-metal, and other materials; tolerances can be as precise as ten microns (0.010 mm); and they are available in many shapes, such as flat, straight, flanged, counterbore, and squared.
