A to Z Analysis of Refractory Materials-Image

Quickly assess the current condition, potential for an extended-life campaign or perform failure analysis of refractory materials and anchor systems for a range of high temperature industries including glass, cement, petrochemical, iron, steel and energy.

With combined extensive experience characterizing the material properties of refractory and metals, M+P Labs, a member of the CERAM Group, provides a unique combination of materials testing, modeling, training and consultancy to clients worldwide.

Testing Scope

Through chemical analysis, we will verify that an anchor alloy meets specification requirements, discover the presence of contaminants and products of reactions. The mechanical properties of metals are often analyzed after a failure to determine if a failed component met all of the design specifications. Tensile and hardness testing are commonly performed. Our skilled metallurgists also utilize advanced analytical techniques such as Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and our electron microprobe to obtain qualitative and quantitative information about the characteristics of a metal or a failure. These tools are utilized to examine and determine the causes of features such as fracture surfaces, pits, weld failures, and evidence of corrosion, erosion and wear.

Our refractory analysis capabilities include physical, chemical and mineralogical testing for a broad spectrum of applications including both fired and unfired refractory materials. We perform a wide range of BSEN, ISO and ASTM test methods, such as Hot Modulus of Rupture, Thermal Conductivity and Expansion, Creep Testing, Vapor Attack Testing, and Exudation and Stoning Potential testing and analysis. We also work with clients to devise custom tests to meet their needs. Through combinations of thermal, stress and chemical exposure, we can closely simulate service conditions to help optimize refractory selection.

CERAM provides refractory consultancy services to customers worldwide, ranging from manufacturers and users, OEM's and installers, insurers and loss adjusters, health and safety to commercial and legal enterprises. Consultancy services can include:

· Failure investigation

· Independent site inspection

· Post-mortem analysis

· Refractory evaluation of materials, components, installation, performance and design

· Auditing of refractory use

· Independent validation of products and designs

· Process benchmarking and improvement

· Expert witness reports and investigations

Refractory Training

As part of an integrated consultancy service, we also offer refractory-related training courses. Course training material ranges from raw material selection to the repair of furnaces. Courses can be designed with e-training elements, and can be tailored to meet your specific requirements.

Computer Modeling

Through computer modeling, real-life conditions can be simulated to calculate and predict the strengths and behaviors of the materials involved. The key to successful modeling is entering accurate material property parameters. Utilize our materials knowledge and mathematical modeling capabilities to aid in-service behavior prediction, failure investigation, product design, mould design and fabrication.
