Compared to extrusions, thinner walls may be possible to help make roll formed parts more cost effective. A variety of metals are available offering different yields and strengths.

What are large volumes?
Since Roll Forming is a coil-based process, if existing tools are available, economical production runs typically begin at 5,000 lineal feet or more. If new tools are required, the economical volume may be 50,000 lineal feet or more to justify the tooling investment. Lower volume requirements would suggest pursuing another process, such as press braking, stamping, or extruding.

Can tools produce different parts?
Roll Form tooling is more unique and different than Press Brake tooling. Roll Form tooling is usually designed with a “flower pattern” to produce a specific profile. Custom rolls are developed to make the specific profile. Sometimes close gauges and similar metals can be accommodated in the same roll tool set. Usually different height, width and/or angle dimensions preclude common roll form tool use.

Are holes and notches possible?
Yes, holes and notches can often be incorporated. Questions arise as to when they are done in the process, e.g. before, during, or after roll forming. The tolerances desired usually answer that question.
