Identification Of Potential Hazards In Chemical Development

Chemists developing products and processes in industry face many challenges when transferring a lab scale reaction to the pilot or production scale. A process investigation is a lengthy, expensive, iterative process in which many experiments are used to fully optimize and characterize a piece of chemistry. In many cases, a hazard investigation is only carried out once the project reaches the pilot scale. It is possible at that stage that information is learnt about the characteristics of a reaction that make it unsafe to use at a larger scale. It may be that the process needs to be modified, taking time and material to re-run what can often be large numbers of experiments.

Death Of The Round Bottom Flask - The Future Of Chemical Synthesis
Chemical synthesis has remained largely unchanged for over fifty years. The round bottom flask has been the backbone for the synthesis lab. But it has its drawbacks. Heating of the reaction mass can be awkward and imprecise. Monitoring the chemical reaction is difficult and a manual, time-consuming process. Reconstructing the data of multiple experiments can take hours and even days. Most importantly, key reaction events can be missed due to the nature of this work.

EasyMax™ was designed to meet the challenges of today's synthetic chemist. Designed as a replacement for the round bottom flask, EasyMax™ is a personal chemistry workstation which eliminates the need to use heating mantles, oil baths, ice baths and cryostats. With no training requirement, EasyMax™ is fast and easy to set up, making users immediately productive. The data logging capabilities of the system capture experimental data which delivers an enhanced understanding of the reaction under investigation, leading to faster reaction optimization and characterization. When used in early stage process development, EasyMax™ delivers key insight to chemists regarding key reaction events. As multiple experiments are completed, EasyMax™ gives the chemist a reproducible 'chemical rate meter' in every experiment.

When used in conjunction with known data regarding the cooling capabilities of pilot and plant vessels, the comparison of different sets of reaction conditions indicates which conditions are scalable, versus those which are not. This reduces the time taken to complete the investigation, and leads to a faster, safer method to develop and scale up a chemical reaction, as better decisions are made sooner in the development process.
