When you have an application with high temperature variations, pressure disparities or flange rotation problems, gaskets with flexibility and recovery are critical. National Rubber’s spiral wound gaskets are designed to meet these demanding requirements. Manufactured of alternate piles of pre-formed metal and a soft, non-metallic filler, spiral wound gaskets offer a precision-engineered, yet low cost solution that combines fire resistance and the ability to handle temperature and pressure fluctuations. Specifically, these gaskets are manufactured by spirally winding a V-shaped metal strip and a strip of non-metallic filler material. The metal strip holds the filler, providing the gasket with mechanical resistance and resilience. The engineered shape of the metal strip acts as a spring under load, resulting in a very resilient seal under varying conditions. The density of the spiral gasket can be varied to meet virtually any requirement. Plus, depending on the chemical compatibility requirements, the filler and winding material can be changed.
Spiral wound gaskets are ideal for use in sealing flange joints, manhole and handhold covers, tube covers, boilers, heat exchangers, pressure vessels, pumps, compressors and valves, as well as other high-temperature, highpressure applications. An industry standard for petrochemical, pharmaceutical, shipbuilding, pulp and paper, and food processing, plus the power industry and nuclear power stations, spiral wound gaskets are generally employed for applications over 150-lb. pressure class. Moreover, spiral wound gaskets can be used to seal fluid pressures as high as 250 bar (3625.9 psi) and temperatures up to 1000°C (1832°F).
Specific advantages of the spiral wound gasket include high reliability, can be used across a wide stress range, will not damage flange surfaces, are easily installed, and are nonadhesive and can be easily removed.
