Precision Robotics and Automation: Hexapods Advance Production Processes
Hexapods, six-legged parallel-kinematic machines, are quickly gaining ground in a broad range of industrial automation applications after “learning” how to directly communicate with PLC or CNC controllers via fieldbus interfaces. As far as the semiconductor and electronics industry, automobile industry, and precision assembly are concerned, many production processes have become inconceivable without them. Today, the six-axis positioning systems are available with load capacity from 2kg to 2000kg and travel from 10 to hundreds of millimeters, while maintaining sub-micron precision. Hexapods are used for aligning the smallest optical components in the latest Silicon Photonics production processes, as controlling automated labeling machines, and positioning entire body parts for automotive production. The intrinsic Hexapod features contribute to a wealth of new possibilities in robotics.

160-page catalog on piezo motor solutions from PI
PI’s new comprehensive piezo motor solutions catalog covers a large number of linear, rotary, and multi-axis motion systems based on a variety of piezo motor types along with their appropriate controllers and drivers.

Piezo motors have excellent dynamic properties, such as high acceleration and fast start/stop behavior, along with nanometer precision and stability. In contrast to traditional piezo mechanisms, like piezo stacks and piezo flexure stages, piezo motors are not limited to short travel ranges.

These properties are used in many industrial and research applications including precision automation, micro-assembly, high-resolution microscopy, mobile devices, opto-mechanics, and scientific instrumentation.

Ultrasonic piezo motors, for example, are preferred for high-speed applications; inertia motors are small and cost efficient; PiezoWalk drives provide the highest forces up to 800 N and piezo-ratchet drives can replace micrometers in remote “set and forget” applications.

All piezoelectric motors are self-locking, field-less, and not affected by magnetic fields, and can be easily integrated mechanically. Appropriate versions are also available for applications in vacuum settings.

PI has in-house engineered solutions with over 4 decades of experience working with customers to provide products that meet application demands, and can quickly modify existing product designs or provide a fully customized OEM part to fit the exact requirements of the application.
