With increasing high-voltage content in automotive and industrial end equipment comes a greater need for protection. E-Fuse, enabled by Microchip's 700V and 1200V Silicon Carbide (SiC) technology, provides a faster, more reliable method for protecting power electronic applications.

E-Fuse solutions can detect and interrupt fault currents microseconds faster than traditional approaches. Fast response times limit peak fault current and prevent a fault event from becoming a hard failure.

Features include:

  • Fast detection time for 400V/800V systems
    • Low let-through current, no moving parts or arcing
  • Resettable feature eliminates design-for-serviceability and simplifies packaging
  • Current measurement to detect an over-current vs. fuse reaction to current (heat)
  • LIN interface for configuration and diagnostics
  • High-side or low-side drive configuration
  • Low operating voltage range: 9V to 16V
  • Operating temperature range: -40°C to 85°C
  • For auxiliary applications (not main propulsion power) –OBC, LV DCDC, cabin heater, AC compressor inverter, and other high voltage loads, etc..
  • Also use as companion E-Fuse to prevent tripping of other system fuses (e.g., pyro fuses)

More details on E-Fuse are available on the Richardson RFPD website, including availability of demonstrator boards operating at 400V/20A and 800V/20A.
