Temperature sensors provide essential data for control of industrial manufacturing processes, but these sensors are often exposed to harsh environments.

Saint-Gobain Performance Ceramics & Refractories offers four types of silicon carbide protection tubes designed to protect sensors and ensure reliable and long-term operation. These are:

  • Tubes closed at one end, for use in a wide range of applications and industries
  • Tubes open at both ends, for use in industrial gas sensors
  • Two types of crushable insulators, for electrically insulating thermocouple wires inside Mineral Insulated Metal Sheathed (MIMS) thermocouples and cables

Saint-Gobain Performance Ceramics & Refractories’ thermocouple protection products have proven be an effective and reliable solution for industrial users for over 30 years.

Hexoloy® SE Sintered SiC thermocouple protection tubes are extruded and closed on one end. The closed end is typically round, however, larger diameters, for example 1.5” tubes, have pointed tip. Hexoloy® SE tubes have thin walls, compared to other ceramic materials, enabling fast thermal response to the sensor.  Hexoloy® SiC will outperform traditional commercially available ceramics and metal alloys.  The high thermal conductivity and low thermal expansion of Hexoloy® materials makes it the perfect material for protecting a temperature sensor in a tight space while still providing a quick and accurate thermal response

Nitride Bonded SiC tubes are an economic choice to thermocouple sensor OEMs. These tubes can be produced to a large range of diameters with several options for mounting. NBSiC does not contaminate non-ferrous melts, like cast iron tubes and is part of temperature measurement of heat-treating furnaces.

Silit® SK, Siliconized SiC, can be used as thermocouple protection tubes, closed on one end. A wide range of diameters (20 mm – 80 mm) can be produced with lengths up to 2000 mm. Tubes with flanges and / or holes are available.
