Safety Relays ESM-F
Euchner-U.S.A., Inc.
Safety Relays ESM-F

The Euchner ESM-F Modular Safety System features an innovative design, interconnecting safety modules, and reliably. The system turns off hazardous machine functions in the event of an unsafe condition. It ensures the machine cannot be restarted until the unsafe condition is corrected and the module reset.

This can be used to protect people, machinery, and manufacturing processes. Up to safety category 4 (in accordance with EN954-1) and stop category 0 or 1 (in accordance with EN60204-1) can be achieved with the proper installation. The safety input modules are positioned to the left of the basic safety module, and the safety output modules are placed on the right side.

The Sensor That Works Like a Human Eye
OSRAM Opto Semiconductors
The Sensor That Works Like a Human Eye

Like the human eye, OSRAM's ambient light sensor has its maximum sensitivity at 560 nm. It is suitable for adjusting brightness of displays and other such components for optimum readability in the available light.

In LCD displays, the sensor helps prevent the rapid onset of eye strain — a common problem if the display is too bright in a dark room. Small mobile terminals, such as mobile phones and PDAs, are easier to read in all lighting conditions and will consume much less power because the display will only be lit as required. This will be easier on the eyes and save battery power!

It Only Looks Like Heavy Metal
It Only Looks Like Heavy Metal

The dine-and-ditch approach to picnics usually means eating watermelon off a paper plate and drinking lemonade from a plastic cup. Several years ago, one company developed plastic disposable forks, spoons, and knives that actually shined with a silver reflection.

The "silverware" has not only enhanced the sophistication of cookouts ever since, it has introduced the process of "sputtering" to injection molded plastic parts. The metal films usually translate to a broader visual selection of products, without the additional labor! Read more about this reflection trend.

Advances in Thermal Dispersion Mass Flow Meter Accuracy

"Thermal flow measuring technology has come a long way since the introduction of thermocouple technology and early hot wire anemometers. Thermal technologies depend on heat transfer and traditionally operate on differential temperature measurements between two temperature sensitive materials to generate a signal directly proportional to the temperature differential and mass flow rate. Over the years, thermal type flow sensors have been utilized across a very wide spectrum of applications and feature an assortment of performance limits. Modern thermal flow sensor designs have greatly evolved from laboratory devices to rugged process instruments with each new generation representing a breakthrough in sensing performance."

This article was provided by Fluid Components Intl. (FCI), a world-leader in precision high-performance flow level and temperature instrumentation.

Taking Aim at the Wood ...

Question:

A piece of firewood is standing on end. Which is more likely to knock the piece of wood over — a lead bullet fired from a gun or a rubber bullet of the same mass traveling at the same speed (and hitting the same spot)?

Answer:
Discuss This

The rubber bullet will be more likely to knock the wood over. The lead bullet will embed itself in the wood, so the wood will have to absorb enough energy to stop the bullet's momentum. The rubber bullet will ricochet off of the wood, so the wood will have to absorb enough energy to stop the bullet plus send the bullet back in the opposite direction. The rubber bullet will supply more total force to the wood and will therefore be more likely to knock it over.
