Helical gears mounted on non parallel shafts are called crossed helical gears. These gears transfer the load by rubbing action along the teeth, this action being fundamentally different from ordinary helical gears where the sliding action is up or doom the tooth profile. Contact occurs only at a point, theoretically, and the cross rubbing is much greater than up and down sliding with the result that the capacity of such gears is relatively light.
