Brushless Motor | Brushless motors have their armature windings on the stator and the field on the rotor. They rely on internal noncontact sensing devices to activate external commutating electronics.
Brush Motor | Brush motors have the armature windings on the rotor. The magnetic fields are commutated via direct contact of brushes with the rotor commutator.
Linear Motor | A linear motor generates force only in the direction of travel. Linear motors are capable of extremely high speeds, quick acceleration, and accurate positioning.
Power Generator | Windings for use for power generation.
Servo Motor | A servo motor is one in which the output movement is measured, fed back, and compared to some desired input function, at which point corrections are made to decrease the error between the two. Servo motors need to rapidly respond to changes in speed and position, which require high acceleration and deceleration rates. Servo motors also need to respond to small changes in control signal.
Stepper Motor | A type of motor that moves in discrete amounts with each electrical pulse.
Switch Reluctance Motor | A motor in which the rotor has no permanent magnets or windings. When one of the four phases of the stator is energized, the closest set rotor poles (made up of reluctance magnets) is pulled into alignment. The switched reluctance motor along with the four-phase converter is meant to be used as a precise speed control device. This motor type is similar to reluctance step motors.
Torque Motor | This type of motor is designed to exert a rated torque, rather than a rated power. They are frequently operated in a stalled condition to maintain tension on conveyors, take-ups, and similar apparatus. Continuous stalled operation causes heat generation to be a significant issue, occasionally requiring external cooling fans.
Traction Motor | Electric motor used to provide the drive to a locomotive or train axle. The traction motor is mounted close to the axle and transmits power through a reduction gearbox. Used in diesel-electric and electric systems.
Other | Other motor type not listed.
