Spindle Type | |||
Your choices are... | |||
Air Bearing | Air bearings employ a compressed air supply to provide clearance and allow for rotary motion with no physical contact. This eliminates wear and friction and allows for high speeds.
Angle Head | Angle head mounted spindles are configured to allow right angle or adjustable angle tool rotation.
Block | Spindles have a rectangular or square solid block or box housing.
Cartridge | Cartridge spindle assemblies can be inserted into a stationary housing.
Foot Mounted | Foot mounted spindle housing can be bolted in place via flanges or feet at the bottom of the housing.
Hydrodynamic | Hydrodynamic bearings are typically low-clearance assemblies that rely on a film of oil (and occasionally air) that develops clearance while the spindle is rotating. Therefore, high startup loads must be avoided for hydrodynamic spindles. Hydrodynamic bearing spindles feature high stiffness and long bearing life, and are often used for fine machining and finishing.
Hydrostatic | Hydrostatic bearings employ a positive pressure supply that maintains clearance between the rotating stationary elements. Hydrostatic bearing spindles feature high stiffness and long bearing life, and are often used for fine machining and finishing.
Magnetic Bearing | A magnetic field provides the bearing between the rotating and stationary elements. Typically, the air gap clearance is low. Magnetic bearings offer virtually no rolling friction, but provide very long life.
Multiple Spindle Head | Multiple spindle heads mount directly onto a machine tool and allow for simultaneous milling, drilling, tapping, etc. with multiple tool spindles. They are used to speed machining operations and for repetitive precision work such as close-tolerance center holes.
Spindle Speeder / Head | Spindles are designed to fit the head of a milling, drilling, turning, or other machine tool. The mounting geometry is typically a standard Morse taper or other standardized machine tool taper. These spindles often have gearing (spindle speeder) to multiply the machine spindle speed.
Other | Other unlisted, specialized, or proprietary spindle configuration.

Spindle Application: | |||
Your choices are... | |||
Boring | Spindles are designed for use in boring, the machining of an internal diameter in the workpiece.
Drilling | Spindles are designed for use in drilling operations, typically with good thrust capacity in addition to radial load rating.
Grinding | Spindles are designed for use with a grinding wheel for precision size and surface finishing.
Hobbing | Spindles are designed for use with hobbing, the cutting of gear tooth profiles.
Milling | Spindles are designed for use with milling cutters. They can include a wide variety of machining operations and tools.
Tapping | Spindles are designed specifically for use with taps to create internal threads.
Turning | Spindles are used in horizontal or vertical lathes and turning centers.
Wheel Dressing | Spindles are designed for use in truing, dressing, contouring, and re-profiling abrasive grinding wheels.
Other | Other unlisted or specialized application.
