Smoke and particulate matter (PM) emissions from combustion sources are indicative of the adequacy of the baghouse or electrostatic precipitator to remove dust from the flue gas. To ensure emissions control systems are operating properly, they are subject to emission limits to prevent air pollution and protect human health. These limits are enforced by local and national governments, and in many cases the source operator must monitor and record the emissions. Of the many available continuous monitoring techniques, opacity and PM measurements remain among the most widely used techniques in the world. They are conceptually simple; the technologies are well-established and high-quality products are readily available. Even so, there are many things to consider to ensure an accurate and reliable measurement. Derek Stuart is Product Manager - Power at AMETEK Land with more than 25 years' experience in industrial gas measurements. He is a member of the Institute of Physics and the ASTM, contributing to several ASTM standards. As a product development specialist, he was responsible for the design of several continuous emissions monitors, including the successful Model 4500 opacity monitor which is used to monitor particulate matter emissions in stack gases worldwide.
