DuPont maintains an active interest in standards development for the electrical power transformer industry and is well known for advocating dry-type transformer standards. For some time now, liquid-immersed transformers have received much attention due to an active global interest in high-temperature liquid-immersed transformer applications. The result is a new IEEE standard for these transformers.
Transformers may be considered "old" devices, but the standards that govern them are maturing and changing to suit the needs of the modern transformer application. Today, state of the art computer programs have extracted about as much cost as possible in pursuit of competitive designs, while still maintaining the highest standard of quality and reliability. High-temperature offers a new avenue to explore the possibilities of matching an application with optimized cost and is now one of the few opportunities available for a true step-change in design strategy. High-temperature design has been around for many years operating on the fringe of the standards and lurking in the background. Since, almost by definition, the standards follow technology rather than lead the development, at some point a critical mass creates the need for a written document to structure and guide the future development of a new technology. This presentation will discuss a new document soon to be published, that will finally standardize high-temperature liquid-immersed transformers. Complimentary to this new standard is the recently published document that defines the test procedures for determining the thermal class of an insulation system in a liquid dielectric medium. The definition of a family of insulation system temperature classes is a critically important part of the new standard. And finally, examples of typical and not-so-typical global applications for high-temperature liquid-immersed transformers will be presented.

An applications research associate with DuPont, Rick Marek is an expert in transformer and specialty power supply manufacturing. His experience includes design, test, and development for special magnetics, dry-type, epoxy cast, and liquid-filled transformer products. A senior member of IEEE where he has been active in the transformers committee, Marek is also an IEC TC 14 delegate for the U.S. Technical Advisory Group, and convener of the high-temperature liquid-filled transformer standard IEC 60076-14. He received his BSEE from Purdue University.
