Overview

In this presentation, our experts give an overview of various e-mobility applications and how they use power semiconductors. Attendees will see examples showing the use of power semiconductors, from a Formula E car using a RoadPak to deliver rapid acceleration on a race track, to a train powered by HiPaks that carries thousands of passengers for more than 20 years over many thousands of kilometers.

The examples demonstrate the experience and technology that Hitachi ABB Power Grids can offer in powering your e-mobility application. The presentation also includes a discussion of Gate units, which are becoming more and more important when driving high-speed, high-power SiC power semiconductor modules. Furthermore, it also includes look into future applications and trends such as e-aviation.

Tobias Keller, VP, Global Head of Product Management, Hitachi ABB Power Grids

Tobias Keller graduated in 2004 from the Electrical Engineering Faculty at the University of Applied Sciences, Aargau with a degree in power electronics, thermodynamics and electrical machines. At the end of 2004, he joined ABB Excitation Systems and Synchronizing Equipment (Turgi, Switzerland) and held various engineering positions there until 2008. He holds the first patent on MEGATROL, ABB's smart power package solution to ensure reliable starting of gas turbines or any synchronous machine and another patent covering quenching arc faults in excitation systems.

In 2008 Keller became the head of global technology and support for ABB's Excitation Systems and Synchronizing Equipment business. Between 2009 and 2015 he was the vice president global products and marketing, ABB Excitation Systems and Synchronizing Equipment and High Power Rectifier business. From 2016 to 2019, he held the vice president position for the Vehicle Integration Engineering business. Since April 2019, Keller has been the vice president of global product management at ABB Semiconductors (Lenzburg, Switzerland) and a strong supporter of SiC technology in power electronics, based on his experience working on traction and industrial applications. Tobias Keller is a senior member of IEEE (20127) and co-author of several papers. Hitachi ABB Power Grids, Semiconductors is one of the pioneers of SiC components for power electronics.

Virgiliu Botan, Global Product manager BiMOS, Hitachi ABB Power Grids

Virgiliu Botan holds a bachelor's and master's degree in physics from Babes-Bolyai University, Romania and a PhD in physical chemistry from the Zurich University, Switzerland. In 2008 he joined ABB Semiconductors' R&D department and developed the next generation of Phase Control Thyristors. After a period in the sales team, Virgiliu joined the global product management team and is responsible for the BiMOS portfolio. Virgiliu is main and co-author of several patents and peered reviewed publications.
