The production of renewable energy with solar farms and wind turbines cannot be time-controlled - the sun is shining during the day; wind is blowing with complex patterns - and it represents the key to a sustainable future. The electrification megatrend, easily recognizable with electric vehicle market boom, but not limited to that - electric heating and cooking systems, de-carbonization of power plants, innovations in factories requiring higher electricity consumption - is pushing the grid to its limits, both in terms of capacity and safety of operation. Energy storage systems, complex solutions capable of storing excess of energy and time-shifting its usage, are the key enabler of the electrification megatrend, from small residential scale to the bigger grid operation.

This presentation starts from the basics of Energy Storage System services and why they are needed to build a sustainable grid. It focuses on the two bigger aspects of ESS: battery monitoring and power conversion.

Attendees will learn why focusing on battery monitoring designs enable longer lifetime of ESS devices, together with enhanced reliability and safety of operation. A deep dive is given into ADI battery management IC features and how ADI engineers can support building complete system platforms together with customers.

ADI solutions to drive SiC and GaN power switches in high-efficiency ESS chargers are also presented, showing attendees how to build isolated driving units with shortest time to market thanks to ADI reference designs.

Stefano Gallinaro has 15 years of experience in the field of power and battery management. He joined Analog Devices' Clean Energy Infrastructure Business Unit in 2016 and he manages the marketing and applications activities related to energy storage, electric vehicle charging infrastructure and renewable energy generation. Based in Munich, Germany, his business responsibilities span worldwide. He studied electronics engineering at the Politecnico of Torino, Italy and began his career as an application engineer at STMicroelectronics, in Aosta, Italy. Before joining ADI, Gallinaro also worked as Product Marketing Manager at Vincotech GmbH in Unterhaching, Germany.
