Automated Lifetime Estimation of Power Semiconductors

Estimating lifetime of power semiconductors considering real mission profiles is important at an early stage of the power electronics system design. To support designers in this phase, Infineon is launching the first automated lifetime estimation service for power modules. With this tool, designers can access Infineon's unique expertise online to validate and select the most suitable device under different operating conditions.

Power modules are a core component of a power electronic system. As such, its lifetime has an important effect on the reliability of the final product. In order to understand how real mission profiles, affect the power modules, complex simulations have to be performed, often pushing the tools and the methodology to their limits due to very long and highly variable profiles. For this reason, a high level of expertise in methodology and semiconductor characteristics is required. Knowing the behavior of power modules in real usage profiles has positive effects on the selection of the right power module and therefore on the reliability and optimization of the system costs.

To facilitate the design process of industrial manufacturers, Infineon has released a new digital service: IPOSIM Lifetime Estimation. Now designers can digitally estimate the lifetime of power modules whenever they need it and as many times as they need it.

Jaime Zapata-Amores, Senior Expert, Simulation of Power Electronics, Infineon Technologies AG

Zapata-Amores comes originally from Ecuador, where he got his electrical engineering degree at the Escuela Politecnica Nacional, Quito, in 2012. In 2018 he received the Ph.D. degree in electronics engineering from Universidad Tecnica Federico Santa Maria, Valparaiso, Chile, and he was invited as a Postdoctoral Fellow in the LAPLACE Laboratory, Toulouse, France, from 2017 to 2019. From 2019 to 2021, he was leading innovation projects at Nidec Industrial Solutions, Milan, Italy, and was mostly involved in the R&D of power electronics topologies for MV drives and smart grid control algorithms.

He is currently working as a senior expert in simulation of power electronics with Infineon Technologies. His research interests include power electronics, high-frequency DC-DC converters, multilevel topologies, control algorithms, photovoltaic and smart grid applications.
