A Sharp Solution to Water Treatment

In many parts of the world, clean water is luxury. An Engineers Without Borders chapter at Utah State University teamed up with a rural town in Mexico to solve a water purification problem in an innovative and sustainable way. Using concrete, washed sand, and PVC pipes, they created a filtration system with one rather surprising component — rusty nails. The town's water was contaminated with arsenic, but the nails removed the toxin by forming a precipitate in which the arsenic sits on the surface of the iron. Water passes over the nails, through a diffuser plate, and then through a sand and gravel filter, removing both arsenic and bacterial pathogens.

Supercapacitor Thread Can Power Phones

Researchers fabricated thread supercapacitors with two capacitive layers using a semi-automatic dip coating method. The two capacitive layers were coated sequentially on a stainless steel core wire with ink, an aqueous-based gel electrolyte, and a silver conductive paint. The thread can be woven into everyday clothing and is capable of storing and supplying enough power for common devices like smartphones and tablets.

Solid Material Cracks, Then Heals Itself

This self-adaptive composite (SAC) consists of sticky, micron-scale rubber spheres that form a solid matrix, created by mixing two polymers and a solvent that evaporates when heated. Unlike other types of self-healing materials that encapsulate liquids in solid shells, the liquid-filled spheres in this SAC are easily deformed but resilient. A coating of viscous polydimethylsiloxane keeps the spheres stuck together.

A Storm is Coming

Veeco Instruments' WaferStorm system features flux cleaning technology that is critical to wafer bumping and joint formation processes. The system's soak-and-spray method removes oxide layers and other impurities to ensure a clean metallic interface for the next assembly step. The new system is capable of cleaning the small spacing in wafers with fine bump pitches and removing even thick film photoresists.

Vapor-grown MOFs Could Yield More Powerful Electronics

Metal organic framework (MOF) crystals resemble bird cages on the atomic scale, and they can be made in various shapes and sizes. MOFs have a large surface area, being almost 80% empty inside; one gram of MOF crystals has a surface area of more than 5,000 sq m. Researchers have created new crystals using a vapor-based method rather than the conventional liquid process, making the crystals more suitable for electronic applications.

3D Printing to Control Energy from Reactive Materials

A team from Lawrence Livermore National Lab and Harvard University is using 3D printing methods to create reactive material architectures that allow them to direct and manipulate the energy released in ways that previously were not possible. First, the scientists build conductive electrodes using a direct ink writing process. Then they use electrophoretic deposition to coat the surface of the electrodes with thermite nanoparticles.

Catalytic Coating Could Aid Drug Delivery

Microscopic, swimming devices may be the next medical breakthrough, delivering diagnostic drugs to a specific site inside the human body. To solve the problem of navigating without constant observation or the need for magnetic fields, the researchers gave the devices a catalytic coating on one side. When fuel molecules were added, the coating created a chemical reaction that caused the device to move along a pre-determined route, guided only by natural structures.

Metallic Glue as Good as a Weld?

A Florida-based startup is developing a metallic adhesive that displays the strength and conductivity characteristics of a weld. The adhesive, made with metallic nanorods coated with indium on one side and gallium on the other, can be applied to virtually any surface and dries at room temperature. As a heat conductor, the glue could replace thermal greases currently in use, and as an electrical conductor, it could replace today's solders.
