Downsized HVAC has Huge Potential

Downsized HVAC has Huge Potential With the need for energy efficiency a top priority for engineers, facility managers, and building owners, a new HVAC design system philosophy is making its down-to-earth mark. Using "low flow, low temperature design," the system features smaller pumps and pipes as compared to traditional commercial models. That saves on the energy required for circulating water. That circulated water, however, is used to make cold air which is distributed to each of the building's zones in smaller than usual ducts, saving on both duct material and the energy required for fan circulation. The low flow system runs far quieter, too.

Carbon Emissions Take a Pill

Carbon Emissions Take a Pill Recently, one bio-pharmaceutical company introduced a low-carbon emission industrial boiler to its manufacturing operation. They estimated it would take years for the system to achieve positive results. However, the burner retrofit taken with other facility improvements like a new heat recovery exchange system, produced immediate carbon reduction results.

Begging for Boiler Space

Begging for Boiler Space One major North Carolina hospital began a boiler retrofit that would provide the 186-bed facility with steam and hot water. But before the new boilers could be moved in, engineers would have to first remove the existing boilers from the landlocked facility. Contractors were forced to install the boiler system through the ceiling. Here's how.

Diminutive Ducts Deliver

Diminutive Ducts Deliver Are the days of bulky, clumsy duct-work about to become a sheet-metal memory? An engineer who helped design the commercial HVAC system that features ducts one quarter the standard size says smaller is better. This efficient, 'high velocity' method of delivering air is attractive for renovations with limited ceiling and wall space.

"And the Cool Winner Is..."

''And the Cool Winner Is...'' The 2010 International Forum Product Design Award winner represents 56 years of high-tech HVAC design. The compact heat pump room air conditioner fan coil unit has a big name, but fits unobtrusively and delivers up to 5.0 kW of cooling power. Available in brushed aluminum or white heavy-duty plastic, the design balances ergonomics, workmanship, and function.

Non-chemical Corrosion Control

Non-chemical Corrosion Control Controlling build up of lime/scale inside water towers without using chemicals might have seemed impossible only a few years ago. Now, a zero-bleed system can control corrosion buildup while completely eliminating the bleed-off water. The LEED-approved, non-chemical water treatment system works with towers ranging in size from 100 to 8,000 tons (see video).

Old West Hotel Goes Green

Old West Hotel Goes Green The Hotel Seville in Harrison, AR once was a swanky old west destination. Recently, the near century old hotel was renovated to its original Spanish style grandeur. But when the existing structure couldn't accommodate modern duct-work, a green "ductless" system was used. A high efficiency, mini-split central HVAC system now provides the old hotel optimum control and "zone-ability."

Diversions . . .
Hotter Than the Sun

Hotter Than the Sun The sun just might be the perfect sustainable energy source known to mankind. But the sun is about to have some competition of an earthly variety. Recently, the Brookhaven National Lab's Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), which is the globe's most powerful ion smasher, produced a collision that created temperatures 250,000x more powerful than the sun, or, 7.2 Trillion degrees F. Despite the ramifications this experiment may have upon the known laws of physics, one thing remains certain: energy now derived from the sun may one day be fabricated here at home.
