Something is Ripening in Denmark

Something is Ripening in Denmark And, if it were, this sensor would let you know about it. Researchers have developed a carbon nanotube-based sensor that measures and monitors the fruit ripening process and helps food distributors and grocers cut losses from spoiled food. It works by detecting minute quantities of ethylene, the gas emitted by fruit as it ripens, and which accelerates ripening. Today, mass spectrometers and gas chromatographs are used to monitor ethylene, but they are expensive — costing about $1,200 each. The researchers who developed the new food spoilage sensor estimate that it might cost only $0.25 or so in quantity production.

That's a Lot of Dough

That's a Lot of Dough The "dopositor," a new, cleverly-named cookie dough depositor promises to optimize food production, up to 14,400 pieces an hour. The machine includes an integrated conveyor, parchment paper feed, and a hopper with a capacity of 75 lbs. The equipment can create a variety of sweet products from scones to pie dough to cookies, even frozen ones.

There's a "ColdFront" Coming

There's a 'ColdFront' Coming A new tunnel freezer from Praxair can freeze or chill a variety of products as part of a continuous process. The solid belt freezer is suitable for wet or marinated products as well as semi-solid foods. The freezer uses less cryogen than existing systems and still produces enough cooling power to maintain product shape, retain moisture, and move items off the belt without damage. A video shows the deep freeze in action.

Robotic Wrapping of Russian Chocolates

Robotic Wrapping of Russian Chocolates Russia's first confectionery to wrap chocolate-covered fruits and nuts has grown its portfolio to 100+ candies. To keep pace with demand, it turned to a highly-synchronized Triaflex system. This Italian loader's design permits operating three or four robots in the same footprint, handling difficult or delicate products including bags, rigid containers, or "naked" cookies. A video shows the robots in motion.

Meshing with Form Fill Equipment

Meshing with Form Fill Equipment A bagging equipment maker and a form-fill-seal (FFS) equipment vendor may not seem likely partners. But the bagging equipment maker was first and foremost a mesh bag supplier. Realizing the right vertical FFS machine could help its customers speed their produce bagging, Volm partnered with Matrix to develop an FFS solution around its durable polypropylene mesh fabric.

Innovation Brings High-speed Bagging

Innovation Brings High-speed Bagging When a rice production facility expanded its output, it needed a bagging system to keep up with the pace. The new bagger can fill, seal, automatically weigh, inspect, and reject, a wide range of bag types and sizes at rates to 1,000 bags per hour. The bags can then be transferred to a palletizer, which wraps and stacks them for transport to the warehouse or onto a truck loading station.

RFID Helps Track Perishables

RFID Helps Track Perishables A case history describes how a supermarket chain uses radio frequency identification (RFID) technology in its meat manufacturing and distribution centers to speed the delivery of products to its outlets. The RFID tracks both the totes and the pallets used in the system. A detailed analysis helped to determine the ideal points for locating the RFID readers.
