Automation at the Bit

Automation at the Bit A drill boss needs to juggle hundreds of tasks, from ROP optimization to kick detection and stuck pipe prevention. But the job may soon be a bit easier, according to the American Oil and Gas Reporter. Control of weight-on-bit, mud flow, and rotation speed is moving downhole, using sensors that rapidly and accurately determine conditions at the business end of the string. As "wired pipe" usage expands, penetration performance is expected to increase while at the same time lowering the risk of kicks, vibration damage, or other minor and major disasters.

All Fouled Up

All Fouled Up Naptha hydrotreater heat exchangers react badly to fouling. Run lengths get shorter, inlet temperatures decrease, and production declines. This study from EPTQ identified problems with the feedstocks and excessive nitrogen-based reactions. A simple but effective cure eliminated unplanned shutdowns, with the added advantage of a 500% ROI.

Peering Under the Overburden

Peering Under the Overburden Shallow gas regions absorb seismic signals, masking the details of deeper formations. This paper from First Break presents a proof of concept study that looks at ways to improve deep resolution using full-azimuth acquisition techniques. Recommendations include increasing azimuth sampling rates, trying circular shoots, and several other image-sharpening solutions.

Determine Precise Pore Pressure

Determine Precise Pore Pressure Estimating pore pressure using only seismic interpretation and rock physics models can be risky, but is often the only way to predict conditions ahead of the bit. By comparing logging while drilling measurements with predicted values, events like kicks and mud losses can be prevented.

Driller's Handbook Available

Driller's Handbook Available Mechanical data and formulae are critical parts of every driller's arsenal, but it's hard to keep all that in your head. This complimentary driller's engineering handbook compresses joint data, pipe capacities and specifications, stretch data, and hundreds of useful facts into a concise and downloadable package.

Stainless Shocks for Harsh Environments
ACE Controls Inc.
Innovative Measurement Solutions
COSA Xentaur

Stainless Shocks for Harsh Environments ACE Controls offers Stainless Steel Industrial Shock Absorbers for long-life applications. The PMC Series includes a Teflon bellows cap that protects against damaging environmental agents. Ideal for packaging, food processing, medical, marine, and more. Barite and Cement Density Measurement
Quantachrome Instruments
Sheet Products
High Performance Alloys, Inc.

Barite and Cement Density Measurement Whether you need to know the density of barite or other weighting agents for formulating mud, or of cement for well casings, gas pycnometers are the method of choice. Choose from manually operated or fully automatic models. Quantachrome Instruments — the authority in powder density measurements.

Sheet Products HPA has the inventory to provide same day shipments for small and medium shipments. Larger quantities can be supplied through their network of mills. Some of their mills may allow them to offer a better delivery to their customers by adding the requirements to HPA's own stock material purchases.

Seafloor Separation

Seafloor Separation Separating produced water at the seabed sounds logical, but the technical challenges at extreme depths are daunting. External pressures of 4,000 psi and freezing temperatures require thermal insulation and high-pressure pumps, but it can be done. The real hurdles include solids removal and better filter design, according to Offshore Magazine.

Slippery Waterfloods

Slippery Waterfloods Alkaline-surfactant-polymers (ASP) are added to injected water to improve oil recovery from marginal fields. Their ability to lower interfacial tension and improve sweep reduces the need for water, but they are expensive to use haphazardly. Upstream Pumping explains how ASPs work and how to optimize your return on investment.

Follow the Glow

Follow the Glow Being able to identify the exact boundaries of an oil spill is critical to remediation. Oil is fluorescent, but so are many other organic and inorganic compounds. The trick is designing a sensor that responds just to oil's glow. Offshore Technology explains the benefits and challenges of accurate detection.

Banishing Black Powder

Banishing Black Powder Black powder is the bane of gas pipeline operators. Left uncontrolled, this corrosion-induced powder can clog pipelines, incapacitate valves, and bring pigging operations to a halt. There are several black powder inhibitors on the market. Saudi Aramco tested 14 of them and found two that met performance expectations.
