Electricity Use by Motors Set to Skyrocket

Electricity Use by Motors Set to Skyrocket By 2030, worldwide electricity consumption by motors could nearly double from today's levels if steps aren't taken to boost the efficiency of electric motor-driven systems (EMDS), warns the International Energy Agency in a new report. The report, entitled "Energy-Efficiency Policy Opportunities for Electric Motor-Driven Systems," also points out that carbon dioxide emissions resulting from this electricity consumption would exceed 8,500 million tons. On a positive note, a 20-30% increase in the efficiency of EMDS could reduce electricity demand by 10%, according to the report, which also includes a variety of recommendations aimed at cutting the energy requirements of EMDS.

Bubble Curtain Contains Spilled Oil The oil spill containment system devised by Norwegian research organization SINTEF functions in stronger currents than conventional booms and is based on bubbles. Compressor-fed perforated rubber air-hoses, anchored by a grating submerged to a depth of a few meters, generate a curtain of bubbles. A horizontal current is formed as it reaches the surface, keeping the oil in place for easier recovery. Sensitive areas can also be closed off to prevent spill damage.
