Another Independent Bites the Dust

Another Independent Bites the Dust The number of small, innovative, independent companies continues to shrink. Teledyne Technologies, which serves niche market segments that emphasize performance, precision, and reliability, has agreed to acquire LeCroy, whose reputation for high-performance instruments and measuring equipment spans almost 50 years. Teledyne anticipates that LeCroy will give the company an outlet for its in-house-developed leading-edge measurement solutions. The transaction offers LeCroy an attractive opportunity to expand products such as its high-end oscilloscopes well past the 100 GHz range by taking advantage of Teledyne's leading-edge indium phosphide (InP) technology.

The Bumpy Road to Designing High-end Instruments

The Bumpy Road to Designing High-end Instruments How do you design a high-performance test instrument? However talented your team, the design process always encounters unanticipated obstacles that slow progress and threaten to compromise the equipment's performance. This article follows the progress of one such team, outlining the design process and sharing lessons learned that can reduce the frustrations they experience in their next adventure.

Exterminating Bugs on a Serial Bus

Exterminating Bugs on a Serial Bus The rapid changes and increasing complexity of today's serial busses complicates the task of verifying that the I/O transactions conform to standards such as PCI Express, MIL-STD 1553B, and FlexRay. This company has introduced a package of firmware and software improvements to help. The package includes enhanced triggering and data analysis, along with test generation tools that automatically match the tests to the standards' specifications.

Finding Out What Went Right or Wrong

Finding Out What Went Right or Wrong In many quality-sensitive electronics applications, knowing what failed and why can prevent future occurrences thereby raising product yields over time. This round-table discussion examines the benefits of product tracking and fault traceability to reduce equipment problems as well as human error. Participants examine the challenges inherent in implementing these techniques on today's dense, complex boards and systems.

Avoid Interference in Combat Vehicles

Avoid Interference in Combat Vehicles Reliable wireless communication requires overcoming electromagnetic interference (EMI) and other ambient noise. A source of annoyance in conventional applications, radio interference can prove disastrous for troops and vehicles in combat situations. Because combat generally demands rapid systems deployment, manufacturers are under constant pressure to reduce test times, thereby shortening production cycles.

Another Boost for Through-hole Inspection

Another Boost for Through-hole Inspection The popularity of surface-mount and similar technologies should not obscure the fact that many boards still include through-hole components. This new automated-optical inspection system specifically addresses this product segment, allowing direct integration into the assembly process. Straightforward test-program generation permits including steps such as checking polarity of electrolytic capacitors and reading on-board labels. A touch-screen interface provides an intuitive user environment.

You Have to Take the Picture

You Have to Take the Picture Visual inspection and visual process control have become mainstays of the electronics manufacturing industry. But how did that technique evolve? How did we get from the primitive film cameras of the past to the charge-coupled devices and other digital technologies in common use today? This white paper offers insight by examining the history of image processing, where it came from, and where it is going.

Not All Defects Occur at the Gate

Not All Defects Occur at the Gate Most test-pattern generation software simulates defects that occur at gate boundaries or interconnects. But many faults reside in the internal circuitry. Although you can often detect the anomalies from the boundaries, you can't depend on that level of visibility. This item describes how software can create test patterns from a model of the cell structure, increasing fault coverage and process yields.

Conforming to the IEEE Standard

Conforming to the IEEE Standard To help verify the performance of wireless local-area networks (WLANs), this company has added IEEE 802.11ac compliance to the capabilities of this RF signal generator and analyzer product line. The family includes instruments aimed at WLAN research, design, and manufacturing. It features fast settling times, appropriate for manufacturing, and a special calibration routine to ensure that the instruments provide the most accurate and precise measurements possible.
