Your choices are... | |||
Acrylic | Resin polymerized from acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, eaters of these acids, or acrylonitrile.
EVA | Ethyl vinyl acetate (EVA) exhibits good thermal characteristics and a high degree of flexibility. EVA is a transparent thermoplastic elastomer. It remains flexible at low temperatures and resists cracking. Brand names include: Ultrathene® (Quantum), Elvax® (DuPont), and Evalca® (Eval).
Nylon / Polyamide | Nylon, comprising several grades of polyamides, is a general-purpose material that is used widely. Nylon is tough and resistant to most oils, gasoline, etc., and has good pressure ratings.
Polyurethane (PU) | Polyurethane (PU) is a diverse class of materials exhibiting good elongation, recovery, and toughness properties. These materials are flexible and have good abrasion resistance. (Note that the urethanes of the plastics industry are so named because the repeating units of their structures resemble the chemical urethane.) Trade names include Texin® (Bayer), Adiprene® and Vibrathane® (Uniroyal Chemical), Estane® (B F Goodrich), Genthane® (General Tire and Rubber), Millathane®, and Pellethane® (Dow Chemical).
PVC | Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is a widely-used material that has good flexibility, smooth surface, and nontoxic qualities. Some grades are used in food and chemical processes due to the inert nature of PVC. Brand names include: ACP® and Dural® (Alpha Gary), Geon® (Geon), Benvic® (Solvay), and Flexalloy® (Teknor Apex).
Vinyl | Vinyl exhibits good flexibility and chemical resistance. It is used in many medical and chemical applications.
Polyethylene / PEX | Polyethylene (PE) exhibits impermeability to gases and fluids and is used frequently for food and chemical grade applications. PE is a semi-crystalline (typically around 50%), whitish, semi-opaque commodity thermoplastic that is soft, flexible and tough - even at low temperatures - with outstanding electrical properties but poor temperature resistance. PE also has very good chemical resistance, but is prone to environmental stress cracking. It has poor UV resistance (unless modified) and poor barrier properties, except to water. Cross-linked polyethylene (PEX) is a thermoset material made from medium or high density, cross-linkable polyethylene that meets the requirements of ASTM F876 and F877. PEX has replaced polybutylene (PB) as the most widely-used flexible plumbing tubing. It is recognized as acceptable for water distribution tubing in most model plumbing codes.
Polypropylene (PP) | Polypropylene (PP) is a thermoplastic material exhibiting excellent cold flow, bi-axial strength, and yield elongation properties. PP is similar to PVC, but can be used in exposed applications because of its resistance to UV, weathering, and ozone.
Polyolefin | Polyolefine is a resin that exhibits resistance to chemicals and is suitable for use with a wide range of media.
PTFE | Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is an insoluble compound that exhibits a high degree of chemical resistance and a low coefficient of friction. It is sometimes marketed in proprietary classes of materials such as Teflon®, a registered trademark of DuPont Dow Elastomers.
Fluoropolymer (PFA, FEP, etc.) | Fluoropolymers are family of fluorocarbon-based polymers with multiple, strong, carbon-fluorine bonds. They are characterized by a high resistance to solvents, acids, and bases. Fluoropolymers covered here include PFA, FEP, ETFE, PVF, ECTFE, PCTFE, MFA, and UHP PFA.
PVDF | Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) exhibits resistance to oxidants, acids, and other chemicals. It also exhibits a high degree of fire resistance. PVDF is a melt processable fluoropolymer. It is similar in properties to other fluoropolymers, but has better strength and lower creep than the other members of this family. PVDF has good wear resistance, and excellent chemical resistance; however, it does not perform well at elevated temperatures. Brand names include Kynar® (Elf AtoChem).
Polyetherimide (PEI) | Polyetherimide (PEI) is an amorphous thermoplastic with good temperature resistance and impact strength. PEI is cheaper than PEEK, but has slightly lower performance characteristics.
Polyketones (PEEK, PEK, PEKK) | Polyketones such as PEEK, PEK and PEKK are high-performance thermoplastics based on highly polar ketone groups in the polymer backbone. Polyketones have a melting point in the range of 255° C, exhibit good solvent resistance, and have good mechanical properties.
