Air Plasma / Corona | Unlike vacuum equipment, atmospheric plasma treating systems do not use a vacuum chamber and electrodes. Instead, a generator and transformer produce plasma and use air pressure to move the plasma through a nozzle. This type of plasma and corona treatment equipment is often used for component preparation in bonding, painting, soldering, and varnishing applications. Corona discharge at frequencies of 15-to-25 KHZ is most effective because of how the electrons oscillate in the gap between the electrodes. Such electrical surface treatment (EST) systems include a high-frequency generator, high-voltage transformer, and treatment electrodes. The frequency of the generator’s output signal is adjusted automatically, and the range depends on the load impedance. The transformer then steps-up the generator’s output signal to the level needed to generate the discharge. Such plasma treatment equipment and corona treatment equipment also features two electrodes: a treating electrode and a counter electrode.
Chemical / Gas Plasma | Chemical and gas plasma systems generate plasma by ionizing a specific gas. Gas plasma treatment systems are useful in removing organic surface contamination in applications requiring critical cleaning. Critical cleaning is often required in the biomedical, semiconductor, printed circuit board, flat panel displays, and in optical industries. Specific gases can impart unique properties to a surface such as biocompatibility. For example, ammonia plasma treatment is used to attach amine functional groups to biomedical component surfaces that act as hooks for anticoagulants like heparin.
Flame | Flames or combustion can be used to generate plasma for surface treatment.
Microwave Plasma | Plasma or ionized gas is generated by using a microwave chamber, which produces more isotropic plasma for etching and ashing processes.
RF Plasma (ICP) | Plasma or ionized gas is generated and sustained by inducing current into the gas or plasma using a radio frequency-powered magnetic field. RF plasma systems are also referred to as inductively coupled plasma (ICP) systems. A very high density plasma with directional effects can be attained, which is useful in achieving anisotropic etch profiles.
Vacuum Plasma | Vacuum plasma treating systems use electrode elements inside a vacuum chamber to produce a high-frequency electrical discharge under low pressure. In some applications, treatment gases such as argon or oxygen are required. Treatment cycle times range from 2-to-120 seconds, and are a function of the surface’s shape and material. Vacuum plasma treating equipment is typically used to treat plastic profiles, containers, molds, and extrusions.
