Pad Type: | |||
Your choices are... | |||
Conversion Pad / Adapter | Conversion pads convert vinyl or PSA pads to hook & loop or other mounting type.
Flap Disc Pad | Back-up pad design to support a flap disc.
Gripper / SCD Pad | Gripper or SCD back-up pads are designed for nonwoven abrasive discs or surface conditioning discs (SCD). Nonwoven abrasives consist of abrasive grains adhered with resin to the internal fiber surfaces of a non-woven textile backing. Gripper pads have special extra-long "T" hooks or fingers for grabbing onto the fibers in nonwoven or surface conditioning discs.
Hand Pad | Hand pads are hand held and are used to manually abrade a surface. Hand pads can be hold round, square, rectangular, triangular or teardrop shaped abrasive sheets.
Hook & Loop (H&L) Disc Pad (e.g., Velcro® Pad) | Back-up pads for abrasive discs or sheets using a hook & loop fabric. Velcro® is a well-known example of hook & loop fabric. The hooks catch onto the loops to hold the product. The fabric with loops is usually attached to the abrasive component and fabric with loops is attached to the back-up pad.
Interface Pad | Interface pads are used between the abrasive disc and back-up pad to soften the action. They consist of sponge, foam or another soft material.
Profile Pad / Shoe | Profile pad or shoes are used to sand or finish contours or profiles. The pad or shoe has the negative contour or profile of the part being sanded and the abrasive conform to the pads profile. Profile pads allow complex contours to be uniformly finished.
Polishing / Film Disc Pad | Back-up pad designed for supporting polishing and film discs. In film discs, abrasive grains are bonded onto a plastic film backing such as polyester. Plastic film backing provide very uniform backing, which is useful polishing, lapping or precision surface finishing applications. Back-up pads for film discs are typically smooth and uniform.
PSA / Adhesive | Back-up pad or holder designed for mounting using an adhesive or pressure sensitive adhesive abrasive disc or product.
Quick Change (QC) / Locking Disc Holder | Holders for quick change, turn-on, roll-on, or locking discs. Turn-on locking disc holders are available for "R" type, "S" type, or both "R" and "S" type discs. Norton Speed-Lok®, 3M Roloc®, Uneeloc® and Smart Drive® are examples of quick change disc holders. Type "S" holders are for snap-on or metal button quick change discs. Snap-on/snap-off type "S" systems allow users to change discs quickly and safely, reducing down time and operating expenses (equivalent to Norton’s TP fastener). Type "T" holders are for turn/twist-on quick change discs. A turn-on/turn-off style fastener (equivalent to Standard Abrasives’ Socatt® locking system or Norton’s TS fastener). Twist or screw on type "T" systems allows changing of a disc with a half turn. Type "R" holders are for roll-on quick change discs. The roll-on/roll-off type "R" discs have a screw or threaded fastener button attached to the disc (equivalent to 3M™ Roloc fastening system or Norton’s TR fastener). Type "R" discs have male sided screw/twist button adhered to the back surface of the disc. Type "N" discs have female sided screw/twist button adhered to the back surface of the disc.
Random Orbit / Dual Action (DA Pad) | Back-up pad or holder is designed use on random orbit or dual action (DA) sanders. If the pad is not designated for use on a random orbit or dual action systems, then the pad is for use on a standard, stationary spindle machines without orbit or dual action.
Resin Fibre Disc (RFD) Pad | Fibre consists of cotton or cellulose fibers vulcanized or chemically bonded into a dense, strong backing. While a strong and durable backing for heavy disc grinding applications, fibre main drawback is the materials sensitivity to humidity change, which can result in curling of the product.
Screen Disc Holder | Screen consists of an open mesh woven fabric. The openings allow abraded material to pass through the opening, which prevents loading of the abrasive surface.
Strip Pad / Block | Strip pads or blocks, longboards, straight-line holders, file pads, platens or sanding shoes have rectangular surfaces for holding rectangular abrasive strips, abrasive file sheets, or square sheets of coated abrasive. Some platens have flat surfaces while other platens are customized with a specific contour matching a parts profile. Strip pads or blocks are often handheld and referred to as hand blocks. Some platens or strip holders are used on power sanders such as jitterbug or vibratory sanders, profile sanders, floor sanders, or edge sanders.
Specialty / Other | Other specialty, proprietary or patented back-up pad type.

Materials of Construction

Your choices are... | |||
Composite / Fiberglass | Back-up pad uses a composite, fiberglass reinforcement, glass fiber reinforced plastic, epoxy fiberglass or phenolic fiberglass backing plate.
Foam | Back-up pad consists of a foam material or uses a foam layer on rubber or plastic backing plate.
Metal | Back-up pad is constructed with a steel, aluminum, die cast zinc, brass, bronze or another metal or alloy. A metal plate provides a very stiff and hard backer surface for aggressive grinding. Metal back-up plates are also used on metallographic grinder-polishers to provide a very flat, uniform surface for sample preparation.
Plastic | Back-up pad is constructed from a plastic such as polyamide or nylon. Plastic backing materials provide more flexibility compared to metal or fiberglass, but less flexibility compared to foam or rubber backing materials.
Rubber / Elastomer | Rubber and elastomer materials have a higher degree of flexibility compared to plastic, fiberglass or metal materials.
Specialty / Other | Back-up pad is constructed from an unlisted, proprietary, or patented or novel material.

Your choices are... | |||
Air Cooled / Fins (e.g., Spirub®) | Air cooled back-up pads have a series of cooling fins, turbo fins or cooling holes, which allow air circulation to cool the back-up pad and disc.
Low Profile | Low profile back-up pads have a softer outer edge, which provides a lower profile during woodworking and automotive sanding applications.
Raised Hub | Back-up pads with a raised hub, which is a useful feature for increased clearance on some angle grinders.
See Through (e.g., Norton AVOS®) | Back-up pad for see through wheel or disc products, which allows viewing of the surface being ground such as Norton AVOS®. See through discs have a series of openings around the periphery of the disc.
Tapered Edge | Back-up pads tapered in from the working disc surface to a smaller diameter.
Vacuum Holes / Dust Free | Back-up pad for discs with a series of hole patterns for vacuum dust collection.
