ElectroPrep Device Delivers Filtered Electrolyte
Micromeritics
Micromeritics' ElectroPrep is capable of producing a constant supply of filtered electrolyte for particle analysis instruments such as the Micromeritics Particle Data Elzone, Beckman-Coulter Multisizer, and Coulter Counter.
Having the absolute minimum number of background particles is particularly important with low-concentration measurements where even a small amount of electrolyte contamination can affect results. This device even makes it possible for a laboratory to recycle electrolyte. By continuously circulating electrolyte through a filter, the ElectroPrep produces a supply of clean electrolyte that guarantees a low baseline while also saving a considerable amount on new electrolyte and waste handling.

Driving the Solar Highway
A highway that pays for itself — this is an idea from Idaho-based Solar Roadways, which is now building 12 x 12 ft (4 x 4 m) prototype solar panels. The plan is to embed the glass-covered panels in the road and turn it into an electricity producing grid. A one mile-long stretch of four lane highway would be able to power 500 homes.

Wired and Wireless Come Together
As wireless LANs become the status quo in organizations, integrating wired with wireless becomes a top priority, especially in the area of security. The goal is to manage the two as a single entity, but — here's where the waters get muddied — not as a single network. The community is looking to WLAN providers to offer solutions; some have responded with common capabilities for wired and wireless users.

The All-the-Time Wind Turbine
A wind turbine that operates when no wind blows must be a hybrid. Compressed air from a natural gas- or biogas-driven turbo-compressor powers a turbo air motor connected to the wind turbine. Ecogeek notes that wind systems can operate during periods of low or no wind and remain 100% renewable energy-based with biogas input.

Motion Control Shifts to Firmer Footing of FPGAs
As motion systems are asked to deliver ever-faster speeds and greater accuracy, engineers have had to find ways to reduce the latency between software command and execution. Their deployment of DSPs dramatically cut run times for operations like reading feedback devices and performing PID loop computations. But they've had to look elsewhere — to field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) — to achieve nanosecond-level response times. They've moved many control functions from microprocessor software to FPGA firmware. Results so far include successes like 30-fold increases in PID loop execution speed, and a fresh perspective: defining system performance by sensor and actuator capability rather than microprocessor limitations.

Development of Microbial Growth in Fuels
"Microbial contamination is not specific to any one fuel type — marine, aviation, automotive and home heating fuels are all susceptible. Similarly, there is no single specific organism that can be identified as being responsible for degradation and spoilage. As a general rule, wherever fuel and water come into contact in a storage or distribution system, microbial contamination is likely to occur." Read this article in its entirety.
