R&D REPORT
Molybendite Joins Race to Replace Silicon
Molybendite Joins Race to Replace Silicon

Graphene is acclaimed for its conductivity and heat dispersion abilities. But it has a new competitor in the race to replace silicon in computer chips. Early this year, Swiss researchers made the first working transistors from super-thin molybdenite flakes. Unlike graphene, it features a direct bandgap, permitting easier on-off switching of the transistor.

Quantum Dots Ready for Prime Time?
Quantum Dots Ready for Prime Time?

What display technology is brighter than LCDs, longer-lived than OLEDs, and potentially cheaper and less power-hungry than either? An active-matrix quantum dot display prototype that provides full color and can be made on glass or flexible plastic substrates. Samsung's 4 in. display reported in a Nature Photonics paper uses semiconductor nanocrystals that glow when exposed to current or light. The color emitted depends on the size of the tiny crystals and the material from which they are made. In addition, the display draws less than a fifth of the power of LCDs, which could significantly extend battery life.

Alternative Method to Determine Porosity
Micromeritics
  Alternative Method to Determine Porosity

The skeletal volume of a solid body excludes pores and void spaces between particles. Envelope volume includes all pores and voids. The combination of these measurements allows one to accurately calculate percent porosity and total pore volume. Micromeritics' AccuPyc II 1340 Gas Pycnometer provides skeletal volume measurements. Micromeritics' GeoPyc 1360 Pycnometer determines the envelope volume and density of monolithic samples and the bulk volume and density of powdered materials.

Smart Labels Verify Frozen Products
  Smart Labels Verify Frozen Products

One company has developed a label that allows retailers and consumers to monitor the safety of their frozen foods. The label, called the OnVu ICE, can reveal if a product such as a pizza or a steak remained in the deep freeze or if the cold chain was interrupted. A Balancing Act

When weighing an object in a single-pan balance, the balance arm oscillates until it settles down. Without a damping mechanism, the arm would oscillate for a very long time and determining the mass of the object would take too long. What type of mechanism (and how does it work) does this type of balance use to shorten the arm oscillations?

How to Select the Right Vacuum Pump for the Application

"Selecting the right vacuum pumping system for your heat treat application is a complex and challenging task with the realization that no single type of vacuum pump is likely to provide all the characteristics necessary to meet all your process requirements. Vacuum pump selection not only demands a thorough understanding of what you need your vacuum system to do, as important is knowing the impact the selected vacuum system will have on the overall cost to produce your product…" Read this article in its entirety.
