Technology's Transformation of Air Travel
  Technology's Transformation of Air Travel

One day, near-hypersonic aircraft may whisk passengers from London to Tokyo in 2.5 hours. Dramatic reductions in weight, drag, and fuel consumption will help keep operating costs reasonable. Those reductions will be possible, in part, due to increasing use of composites, ceramics, 3D printing, and acrylic resin. Other concepts such as "geared turbofan" engines and "double bubble" fuselage designs will also impact the future of air travel. In this piece, The Economist examines emerging technologies that promise to transform aircraft in terms of speed, fuel efficiency, and flight capabilities.

Polystyrene Tops Batteries in Energy Delivery
Polystyrene Tops Batteries in Energy Delivery

A soft, foldable membrane made from polystyrene holds promise to deliver energy better — that is, more cost-effectively — than existing storage batteries. Researchers at the National University of Singapore have developed a polystyrene that, sandwiched between two charged metal plates, stores charge at 0.2 farad/sq cm — far higher than the upper limit for standard capacitors.

The "Internet of Things" is Reshaping Manufacturing
The 'Internet of Things' is Reshaping Manufacturing

To achieve greater levels of automated interaction, manufacturers are tapping into the "Internet of Things" to connect people, devices, and systems on a multi-plant scale. As a part of this process, they are extending connectivity by increasing the use of preventative and condition-based monitoring, linking field devices to MES and ERP systems, and remixing resources to build new applications. Ethernet and wireless network implementations are growing, as is the integration of RFID tags and sensors. The ultimate goal of this shift? Make data available across the enterprise.

Take Care of Your Pumps and They'll Take Care of You

"The old saying, 'an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of care' may have been coined by process and plant engineers tired of repairing or replacing pumps. Pumps are often the most under serviced pieces of equipment in process automation when it comes to maintenance and prevention best practices. Unfortunately, nothing moves without the humble pump and a process becomes inefficient when they don't operate properly or completely shutdown." Read this article in its entirety.
