BX4 Series of Brushless DC Servomotors

MICROMO
BX4 Series of Brushless DC Servomotors

Using the latest production methods, some specially developed by FAULHABER, the company has constructed a modular design that is limited to just a few components which entirely eliminates the need for adhesive-bonded joints.

Despite the compact dimensions, the new four-pole concept of the series ensures a high continuous torque of up to 12.2 mNm, with a flat gradient of the n/M characteristic curve. Notable features are the smooth running characteristics and the particularly low noise level.

Thanks to its electronic commutation, the brushless servo motor series is characterized by a much longer service life than mechanically commutated drives.

R&D REPORT
More Data Than the Internet
  More Data Than the Internet

Radio telescopes acquire phenomenal amounts of data. But a new telescope that's in the planning stages will generate more data in a day than the entire Internet. The Square Kilometer Array (SKA) will have an antenna array that spans more than 3,000 km. A major computer maker is partnering with the Netherlands Institute of Radio Astronomy to work out a new processing architecture to handle the approximately one exabyte (one million terabytes) of data that the system will generate each day. Optical interconnect technology and a 3D chip-stacking technology may be pieces of the solution. Project completion is projected to be in 2024.

Line Workers Come to Grips with 'Robo-Glove'

While the military has been developing robotic exoskeletons that can give a soldier added lifting strength and motion endurance, NASA and General Motors have similarly come up with a Robo-Glove allowing auto workers a more powerful grip for assembly line tasks. Developed from International Space Station robotic projects, the device uses four small servo motors, gearheads, and ball screws powered by a forearm-mounted Li-ion battery pack. Force sensitive 'fingertip' resistors provide closed-loop feedback to a microprocessor and motor controllers to move ball screw driven "tendon" fibers on each finger. Watch a prototype in action.

  Everyone is Goin' Mobile

A step above AGVs, mobile robots can reroute themselves. In addition to connecting "islands of automation" in industrial applications, mobile robots can perform security patrols and monitor environmental conditions critical to the operation. "We envision mobile robots developed for large-scale tasks including aerospace, off-shore, and road, bridge, and building construction," postulates research engineer Paul Hvass. Gas Turbine Designs on the Move
Gas Turbine Designs on the Move

Projections indicate that electricity generation based on natural gas will rise this year, and by 2025 may actually supersede coal as the main electricity generating fuel. Moving to gas-fired generation means that gas-turbine flexibility and efficiency will become even more critical as operators build a new fleet of power plants. Power Engineering examines the innovations from various turbine manufacturers. Some turbines will offer more flexibility with the ability to operate down to 20% of maximum load. Another manufacturer is leveraging its aircraft turbine experience to offer features such as quick startup and rapid response to load changes. Of course, all turbines are designed to meet environmental concerns.

The Low Mass Solution to 0402 Tombstoning

"By definition, a tombstone is a defect where a 2-leaded, wrap-around lead style termination chip component has failed to lay down and allow the solder to make the required electrical/mechanical connection to the target pads simultaneously. The effect is where only one side of the 2-leaded chip component has been soldered to the target pad and the sister termination of the chip component is not in contact to the target pad."
