A Taxing Situation

A Taxing Situation At the end of 2005, a critical tax break for R&D expenditures expired. The tax break, which was put into effect in 1981, has been used by more than 16,000 companies since its implementation. Although proposals have been developed to make the tax credit permanent, success has not been achieved. Currently various professional organizations are urging companies and employees to lobby Congress to extend the credit. When applied to specific R&D activities, the credit provides a 20% break; one that could save organizations millions of dollars each year. Could your organization benefit from such a tax break?

Chromatography Monoliths

Chromatography Monoliths Column chromatography is a prominent method used for separations. In most instances, columns are packed with a host of porous materials that allow efficient separation. New advances in chromatography replace column packing with new materials known as monoliths. These materials increase the efficiency of separations chemistry while increasing the speed of chromatography techniques.

Process Intensification

Process Intensification Process intensification or PI was developed in the 1970s to miniaturize operations and provide more efficient process engineering. Despite the notable advantages, PI has failed to live up to its promises. Although PI doesn't provide a full scale solution for process engineering, many new PI technologies have proven viable alternatives for engineers.

Hydraulics Make a Come Back

Hydraulics Make a Come Back In recent years, interest in hydraulics has begun to wane. Notable inefficiencies and increased costs have made hydraulics less than optimal for most operations. However, new advances in hydraulics such as fluid power have sparked a new interest in hydraulics. Should your company give hydraulics a second look?

Motor Controls and Drives

Motor Controls and Drives Drives and motor controls are essential for process operations. Although speed is a desirable quality in these tools, engineers must balance speed with efficiency in operation. Without control in this area notable problems can arise for process control. Make the right choice by finding out more…

Engineered Yeast

Engineered Yeast As the price of gasoline begins to increase again, interest in the development of biofuel has become pressing. In an effort to spur the development of biofuel processing researchers from the Whitehead Institute and MIT have created engineered yeast. The new yeast increases the efficiency and speed of biofuel production.

New Glass

New Glass Although glass appears to be a solid, it is a liquid comprised of randomly assembled particles. This feature is what makes glass breakable. In an effort to improve the stability of glass, researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison have created a new glass which eliminates the randomness of particles, making glass stronger.

Protection from Chemical Vapors

Protection from Chemical Vapors Protective clothing to prevent exposure to toxic vapors and aerosols can be both restrictive and produce heat exhaustion. To improve this clothing without compromising personal safety, scientists have developed a new rubber suit which contains liquid crystals. The rubber suit repels harmful chemicals while still providing a high degree of comfort for the wearer.

Back to Chemical Basics

Back to Chemical Basics Chemical safety is a principle concern, yet chemical management has become less of a priority recently. To ensure that comprehensive chemical management takes place, a number of best practices have been developed to improve outcomes. Best practices can improve chemical safety and management with little cost to the organization.
