Polymers Deliver Gene-based Drugs
Scientists have designed a polymer that delivers genetic-based drugs to diseased cells. The idea: heal the cells with DNA cleansed of the disease's markers. Until now, getting DNA into the body at the cellular level has proven difficult. The new polymer not only makes delivery possible, it also permits luminescent tracking with sensitive microscopes.

Polymer Promises Terabyte Data Storage
With a new polymer called baroplastic, Korean scientists are making millipede data storage practical. A super-dense, millipede memory chip can hold up to a terabyte (1,000 gigabytes) of data per square inch, but requires extremely high temperatures to activate. Because baroplastic softens under pressure, the scientists can write and read to the chip using pressure instead of heat.

Plastics Tech Preview
What's new in molding processing? Modern Plastics Worldwide previews two exciting technologies to be introduced next March at the International Plastics Technology Colloquium in Germany. The first involves molding and metal die casting in a single molding process. The second: a new and inexpensive means of foam injection molding. Plan your trip to Germany now.

Step by Multi-colored Step
German moldmaker Zahoransky Formenbau GmbH has introduced a newly patented Servo Cavity Positioning System (SCPS) that can produce multi-color or multi-material pieces from a single machine. The SCPS stacks the process steps vertically, so each injection zone has its own geometry and runner system. Moveable inserts shift away from the base, allowing the unit to index for the next molding. The technology is smart in its simplicity, and it saves space and money.

Try it Once, You'll Use it Forever
Competition Chemicals, Inc.
Simichrome — the all purpose metal polish. Perfect for polishing molds, dies, and more. Great for product finishing. Excellent purging compound, too!
BlueAway — the fantastic cleaner to remove heat-caused discoloration or "blue-ing." Great mold cleaner, too. For complete information and a complimentary sample, visit our Web site or call Competition Chemicals at 641-648-5121. |
Plastics: Injection Molded
MAMCO
The use of robotics in molding is a critical part of MAMCO's precision engineering. Robotics help eliminate the shortcomings of manual operation and produce custom injection moldings more quickly and efficiently. MAMCO's use of robotics is a huge step forward in precision engineering. |

From Freezing to Ultra Fine
Reduction Engineering Scheer Inc. and Air Products have created the first cryogenic impact mill for ultra-fine size reduction. The new Black Ice Series Cryonizer uses liquid nitrogen to fine mill. There are three milling actions: impact, attrition, and particle-to-particle impact milling. The ultra-fine powder it produces is as small as 50 microns. It features variable speed and reverse rotation.

System Extrudes Three Layer Pipes
Austria's Cincinnati Extrusion GmbH has developed a three-layer pipe extrusion system that allows for two random outer PP layers and a glass reinforced middle layer. The system can extrude from 25/50/25% to 33/33/33% to give the pipe added strength. Extruded into a spray, or full bath for cooling, the pipes can be used in heating or sanitary lines for hot/cold water transport.

Sun Screen for Wood
Protecting wood products is getting easier thanks to Bayer MaterialScience's newest polyurethane, Bayhydrol® UV XP 2690. The coating can fend off damage from sun and weather exposure for as long as eight years. It's available in clear or pigmented coats, for spray or roller application. A solvent-free waterborne dispersion of the product, Bayhydrol® UV XP 2775, is environmentally-friendly.

Sun Screen for Roofs
Developed at MIT, a new roof tile features three layers: dark polymer at the back, a polymer and water mix in the middle, and a clear layer on top. During hot weather, the polymer condenses to form droplets which produce a white surface to reflect the sun's heat. When cool, the polymer turns clear, allowing the black back panel to absorb heat.

Inside/Outside
Which sales representatives are right for your company? Dedicated, inside staff or outside reps? Maintaining a small sales team could mean small growth. Using outside help could compromise your engineering message. So, which to choose? Modern Plastics Worldwide presents the pros and cons of both choices.

Synthetic Roots Stop Erosion
Here's an unusual strategy for soil reinforcement: inject the roots of living plants with liquid polymers. Root systems naturally hold the soil in place, but are only effective while the plant is living. Injected plastic takes the form of the roots; when the plant dies back, the synthetic root system survives. |
