Video: Pack More Copper in the Stator

Video: Pack More Copper in the Stator Motor manufacturers today — especially those making fractional horsepower motors — are challenged to increase the power their products can produce and reduce their size. A straightforward and well understood way to do this uses a manufacturing technique called segmented stator technology, or 'cut core' technology. It's a tedious process that's hard to automate, but it packs double the amount of copper in the stator windings. Although it increases the motor price by 30%, it boosts the torque density by a factor of two or three. Paul Murphy from Moog Components explains the construction and its benefits in this video.

"Compact" 11,000 HP Motor

'Compact' 11,000 HP Motor Even engineers who buy medium voltage AC motors have a compact option now that the SH630 has joined the family. It runs on supply voltages of 2.3 to 13.8 kV, and offers high horsepower — up to 11,000 hp (8.1 MW) — for heavy duty process industry applications. It also has a wide selection of cooling configurations.

Powering the World's Largest Cruise Ship

Powering the World's Largest Cruise Ship Three energy-efficient 20 MW 'Azipod' propulsion units power the world's largest (5,400 passenger) and most spectacular cruise vessel. Electrically driven propellers mounted on steerable pods external to the ship drive the newly launched $1.2 billion Oasis of the Seas. It took 5,000 km (3,125 miles) of cable just to wire everything.

Coreless Minimotors

Coreless Minimotors This graphite-commutated version complements a range of 'coreless' DC motors. They feature quick acceleration and great robustness. These differ from standard iron rotor DC motors in that they are equipped with a self-supporting copper coil which is very light and has a low moment of inertia. Control electronics are available.

Smooth at Any Speed

Smooth at Any Speed Designed for smooth operation at low speeds, the frame of this DC motor is made in a square shape that improves commutation and heat dissipation. It also requires less mounting space than round body motors. They operate from solid-state rectified power sources and range from 1.5 to 500 HP (1 to 396 kW).

Super-short Servos

Super-short Servos This German motor manufacturer introduced a servomotor design that is about half the length of standard servomotors. The higher power is achieved using an optimum copper filling factor for the stator windings. The motors will initially be available in three sizes and in five lengths, and come with various encoders and brakes.

Nothing Sticks to This Motor

Nothing Sticks to This Motor This stainless steel protection system for linear drives was designed for industries that deal with sticky and sugary fluids, such as in food manufacturing. The 'Clean Design' with its specially built longitudinal seal protects not only the linear drive, but the associated guides and position sensors. The drive can survive frequent washdowns.

This May be the BE$T

This May be the BE$T The latest version 3.0 of an energy efficiency estimating tool BE$T may be downloaded. The software analyzes the annual cost and efficiency of existing installed motors. It also suggests the savings that could be achieved by replacing existing motors with (no surprise here) equivalent sized Baldor premium efficiency motors.

Motors with a Wireless Option

Motors with a Wireless Option A servomotor with an antenna on it — how cool. This Danish manufacturer takes motor integration a step further by including wireless communication modules that eliminate cabling (except for power). No more broken cables or loose connections. With mesh networking, data from any node can reach any other node.

The New Trend: BSMEs

The New Trend: BSMEs For several years, articles have discussed an impending shortage in available engineers. Surprise: the number of mechanical engineering graduates in the U.S. has increased 27% in the last six years. What's behind this sizzling new trend? It's because with a somewhat more general field like mechanical engineering, engineers can get involved in a great variety of exciting multidisciplinary technology areas. Included in the list of 'growth' areas are alternative energy, electric vehicles, mechatronics, and biomedical engineering, says this Design News editorial.

Video: Ice Fishing in Style

Video: Ice Fishing in Style When it comes to the pastime of ice fishing there are only two camps — those who swear by it and those who think it's crazy. But then there is the engineer's view. Think ice fishing is cold and boring? Ah, the Wilcraft (an ice fishing car) makes it all fun. It travels on either ice or water, so there's no worry about hitting thin ice. Get it to where you want it, cut some holes, and it turns into a cozy tent where you can be warm and comfortable while fishing inside.
