Cages Turn in PEEK Performance
When half the Tour de France teams equip their bikes with your bearing, you know you have a winner. Racers have moved en masse to bearing cages made of PEEK. The polymer's sliding properties reduces friction while its low density contributes to quicker acceleration, making a difference at the finish line.

Surface Treatment Swells Spherical Lifespan
We expect manufacturers to conduct research to improve their products. The paybacks aren't always there. In this case, however, research on friction-causing slippage in spherical roller bearings led to a new surface treatment on the outer ring — and dramatic results: better control of rotating rollers, and doubling of the bearing life.

Fastest Gun in the Shop
There are glue guns; then there are high-temp, high-tech tools that ease fastening work, even with heat sensitive materials. This microprocessor-controlled gun is designed for polyamide and polyester adhesives. It provides plenty of user help, from +/- 2F temp control in the melt tank, to fast trigger-to-discharge response, to pneumatic assistance.

Thin Force Sensor
For research and design, product testing or prototyping, engineers appreciate the convenience of small force sensors, designed for use with their own multimeters. This sensor, made of flexible polyester film just 0.008 in. thick, permits users to slip it into almost any tight space to measure forces of two mating surfaces, in the 0-25 lb 110N range.

Video: Custard Improves Kevlar Bullet-proofing
UK scientists have demonstrated a liquid armor that stops bullets — or at least can help Kevlar stop them. BAE developed a shear-thickening, "custard-like" liquid that reacts faster and keeps the impact shallower. It absorbed the force of a 300 mps bullet strike, quickly locking its molecules together and becoming more sticky.

ePTFE Ropes in New Markets
Robert Gore stretched poly to create ePTFE decades ago. Yet the widely-known waterproof, breathable material continues to stretch into new uses. This clip explores some high-tension, high-stress bending applications like rope for ship anchor tow cables. The material reduces friction and wear, so provides greater longevity while also providing requisite strength.

Sure-thing Springs
If your project needs dependable deflection, and you can deflect up-front cost issues, machined springs are worth considering over traditional wire wound springs. Because they have no internal stresses, machined springs provide more precise, predictable deflection rates. Their perpendicularity, parallelism, axial, and torsional rates are close to a sure-thing.

Oilfield Seals: Predictable, Not Perfect
Perfection isn't attainable, especially in oilfields. Drilling mud, sour gas, 22,500 psi pressure, 350 F temps all contribute to seal failure. After reviewing common seal types, this article highlights one that achieves 50% longer life. The spring-energized, graphite-reinforced PTFE ring is coupled with a thermoplastic anti-extrusion element and a metal locking ring.

Business Idea Boot Camp
Where did your last fresh business idea come from? For Lucent Technologies, neither web-based suggestion boxes nor contests with incentive payments worked. Better ideas sprang from incubation boot camps, where employee groups learned to develop business plans, presented them to venture capitalists — and hoped Lucent would fund their concept.

Video: Glass Shatters Time-to-Market Record
Fifty years after developing unbreakable glass, Corning finally found a market for the material. Originally formulated to withstand pressures of 100,000 psi, glass strengthened through an ion-exchange process, is now appearing in mobile phone and laptop covers. You've probably heard of Gorilla Glass; now watch it in this tradeshow demo. |
