In
1940, the science fiction writer Isaac Asimov created three laws of robotics.
Now, more than 60 years later, moves are afoot in Japan to create a new set of
safety guidelines for robots. The initiative is largely being driven by next-generation
robots coming into close contact with humans in applications such as nursing,
security, and cleaning.
|
|
But what
exactly should the 21st Century regulations for robots say? Read
how the Japanese are approaching the topic.

Design Considerations for Smart Battery Systems
|
|
|
"Fueled
by industry and consumers, marketplace demand is skyrocketing for high-power portable
instruments and equipment. In the healthcare and field-service industries, for
example, companies hope to increase productivity, competitiveness, and customer
service by implementing the use of portable electronic devices into many daily
business operations. To address this rising demand, electronics manufacturers
are leveraging faster processors, enhanced color displays and backlighting, and
wireless networking, as well as voice and multimedia capabilities for next-generation
portable devices. But the transition to highly-sophisticated, power-hungry portable
electronic systems in smaller, lighter, more ergonomic packages is creating new
battery system-design challenges."

Mysterious
Spinner...
Question:
We have a gizmo that looks like a slender rock, is somewhat elliptically shaped,
and has a flat top. This gizmo has a "preferred direction of spinning" —
if you tap it, it will begin to spin in one direction. If you manually spin it
in its preferred direction, it happily spins for a while. However, if you spin
it in the opposite direction, it will shudder, come to a stop and then start spinning
again, but in the preferred direction. What is this gizmo?
Answer:
This "gizmo" is known by a few different names: Rattleback, Celt, or Wobblestone.
They have also been referred to as "space pets." The Rattleback prefers to spin
in a counterclockwise direction. Its spinning preference is due to its offset
center of gravity. If forced to spin in a clockwise direction, it will turn for
a few revolutions, stop, oscillate, and then begin spinning counterclockwise.
(Very stubborn, indeed!)

Aerospace
Contactors
Aerospace contactors are high-performance, high-capacity circuit controls designed
for aerospace applications.
Microscope
Stages
Microscope stages are platforms where specimens are placed for observation with
a microscope. They are often equipped with a mechanical device that holds the
specimen slide in place, but allows the back-and-forth and side-to-side movement
of the slide.
Milling
Machines
Milling machines move a clamped workpiece into a fixed, rotating cutter; or move
the cutter itself into a stationary workpiece. There are two basic configurations:
vertical and horizontal.
Programmable
Automation Controller (PAC) Modules
Programmable automation controller (PAC) modules are add-on devices that perform
a specific control function in PAC systems. |
|
Programmable
Automation Controller (PAC) Systems
Programmable automation controller (PAC) systems consist of PAC modules, each of which performs a specific function. PAC systems are used in motion control, machine control, machine vision, and other industrial control applications.
Programmable
Automation Controllers (PACs)
Programmable automation controllers (PAC) are compact industrial controllers used
in applications such as data acquisition and control, machine vision control,
and process control. PACs are functionally similar to programmable logic controllers
(PLC), but provide the advanced software features of personal computers (PC).
Zero
Speed Switches
Zero speed switches are devices used to detect stoppage of a rotating shaft. They
typically have one or more relays.
