T Series Anamorphic Lenses

The T Series lenses build on Panavision’s long tradition of designing and developing high-quality anamorphic lenses for motion picture. They combine new optical layouts with mechanical advances from the G series, but have a larger sweet spot and focus closer than some of their predecessors. Optical features of the T Series lenses include high contrast, well balanced aberration control, excellent glare resistance, tightly controlled anamorphic squeeze ratio, and minimal breathing.
T Series lenses engraved focus and T-stop scales appear on both sides of the lens, with metric focus and T-stop gears arranged in the standard Panavision locations. Add in the lightweight, compact design, and you have a lens that delivers superior optical quality in an easy to use package. The T Series focal lengths include 35mm, 60mm, 100mm, 135mm, 150mm primes which are augmented by the AWZ2.3 37-85mm zoom. The primes have a typical speed of T2.3 and close focus of 2 feet. The T60 focuses down to 1 ½ ft. Additional focal lengths will be announced soon, including 28mm, 40mm, 50mm, 75mm and 180mm.
All the lenses in the T Series primes have a common front diameter of 4.44 inches to make changing lenses simpler.
They are also tuned to be compatible with digital sensors without losing any of the imaging characteristics that have become part of Panavision’s anamorphic grammar.

Panavision also offers anamorphic versions of the spherical 11:1 and 3:1 Primo zooms equipped with rear-mounted anamorphic optics. Both of these zooms work well as an in-shot zoom or as a variable prime.

The 3:1 Primo Anamorphic Zoom (ALZ3) is convertible to a 270-840mm, T4.5 anamorphic zoom with a close focus distance of 8 feet 7 inches. The 11:1 Primo Anamorphic Zoom (ALZ11) converts to a 48-550, T4.5 anamorphic zoom lens with a close focus distance of 4 feet 1 inch.

Panavision also offers anamorphic versions of the spherical 11:1 and 3:1 Primo zooms equipped with rear-mounted anamorphic optics. Both of these zooms work well as an in-shot zoom or as a variable prime.

Anamorphic Telephoto Zoom - ATZ

Introduced in 2007, the Panavision Anamorphic Telephoto Zoom is a T3.5, 70-200mm zoom with a close focus distance of 5½ feet. The lens is 15 inches long and weighs only 12.75 pounds. Following on the AWZ2, the Panavision ATZ is the second modern zoom lens to use anamorphic elements at the front of the lens.

Anamorphic wide-angle zoom - AWZ2

Introduced in 2004, the Panavision AWZ2 is the first modern zoom lens to use anamorphic elements at the front of the lens. This is a T2.8, 40-80mm zoom with a close focus distance of 3¼ feet. The lens is 10½ inches long and weighs only 10.4 lbs. The industry often refers to the AWZ2 as the "Bailey zoom," after John Bailey, ASC, whose creative thirst for a superior wide-angle anamorphic zoom inspired Panavision's engineers to develop this groundbreaking technology.

C Series Anamorphic Prime Lenses

The Panavision® C Series Anamorphic Primes have been the go-to choice since 1968 for artists needing a compact and lightweight anamorphic lens.

The distinctive optical quality and small size of the C Series appeals to cinematographers striving for the visual signature that defines the credit “Filmed In Panavision”. Characterized by a graduated depth of field, predictable full field performance at all apertures, a pronounced anamorphic flare, and a flattering bokeh, these lenses impart an organic feel that many cinematographers prefer over the sterile look of some modern day optics.

C Series technology has served as a foundation for later generations of lenses, and has in turn benefited as Panavision retrofitted significant design enhancements into the C line. These upgraded C Series lenses have served as the sole set of anamorphic primes on many productions. They can also intercut seamlessly with other sets of Panavision anamorphics such as the E Series, Primo® AL Series, and G Series lenses.

The C Series includes 20mm, 30mm, 35mm, 40mm, 50mm, 60mm, 75mm, 100mm, 150mm, and 180mm focal lengths with widest apertures ranging from T2.3 to T3.5 and close focus distances from 2 feet 6 inches to 7 feet. With their compact size and light weight, C Series lenses are ideally suited to both handheld and Steadicam applications.

E Series Anamorphic Prime Lenses

Introduced in the 1980s, the Panavision® E Series Anamorphic Primes remain the first choice of anamorphic lenses for many cinematographers. Building on the success of the C Series, the E Series offers improved optical quality over their predecessors, with more sophisticated anti-reflection coatings, newer spherical components, and a refined optical formula with fewer aberrations.

The stunning optical clarity of the E Series has earned these lenses a well-deserved reputation as the “A set” of lenses for many directors of photography. But even though the E Series delivers an overall sharpness that is undeniably clean, they do not produce a look that is too clinical or too sharp.

The E Series Anamorphic Primes experience minimal fall off on the edge of the frame and the center to edge resolution flatness is excellent. These lenses retain true anamorphic artifacts such as disproportional vertical focus breathing, mild barrel distortion (with wide angle lenses), and an apparent compressed depth of field without an excess of flare. The E-series creates clean blue horizontal flares without additional artifacts such as veiling glare and edge reflections.

The E Series includes 28mm, 35mm, 40mm, 50mm, 75mm, 85mm, 100mm, 135mm and 180mm focal lengths with widest apertures ranging from T2 to T2.8 and close focus distances from 3 feet 9 inches to 5 feet. The E Series is an ideal A-camera lens in studio mode and delivers excellent results in handheld applications. Due to size and weight, E Series lenses are not suited to Steadicam use.

G Series Anamorphic Prime Lenses

Introduced in 2007, G Series lenses are a successful marriage of the compact convenience of the C Series and the optical innovations of the Primo® AL series.

The standout optical features of the G Series lenses include high contrast, high resolution images, well balanced aberration control, excellent glare resistance, tightly controlled anamorphic squeeze ratio, low maintenance cylindrical layout, and minimal breathing. Panavision® fabricates each lens element to precisely match spherical components with a corresponding cylindrical set to achieve an unprecedented degree of optical performance.

G Series lenses include engraved focus and T-stop scales appear on both sides of the lens, with focus and T-stop gears arranged in the standard Panavision locations. Add in the lightweight design, and you have a lens that delivers superior optical quality in an easy to use package.

The G Series includes 25mm, 30mm, 35mm, 40mm, 50mm, 60mm, 75mm, and 100mm focal lengths with a typical speed of T2.6 and close focus under 3 feet. All the lenses in the G Series have a common front diameter of 4.440 inches to make changing lenses simpler. These lenses are optically comparable to Panavision E Series anamorphics, but in a lightweight, compact format similar to the C Series Primes and spherical Primo Primes.

These lenses feature high contrast and resolution, low lateral color, negligible veiling glare, low ghosting and distortion, and consistent image quality throughout focus and zoom. Designed and manufactured by Panavision® with digital in mind

Digital cinematography lenses have to compensate for the reduced size of the CCD image. At only 11mm in diagonal length, as compared to 27.5mm for 35mm film, the ⅔ inch CCD requires 2.5 times more horizontal magnification. This meant that Panavision® had to design lenses with 2.5 times the performance of the best film lenses.

We designed the Primo Digital lenses to address the challenges of resolution and depth in the ⅔ inch format. To maximize versatility and optical image quality, Panavision developed a precise recipe. Primo Digital lenses feature state-of-the-art mechanical components, such as ultra precision linear bearings, direct drive systems with no gears, low static and dynamic friction, minimal backlash, ultra smooth movements, and stable boresight. Add in high reliability and durability, exotic glasses, finely ground aspherical surfaces, high efficiency anti-reflection coatings. Then put it in an easy-handling, lightweight package. The ergonomic features of these lenses includes dual focus, zoom and iris scales, individually calibrated scales, expanded focus scales, linear iris scales, and optimal zoom scale markings.

Panavision offers six digital primes in focal lengths ranging from 5mm to 35mm, all with an aperture of T1.6. Four digital zooms – a 6-27mm with an aperture of T1.8; a 25-112mm at T1.9; an 8-72mm at T1.9; and a 9.5-105 at T1.6 – provide a full compliment of zoom options.

The Primo Digital lenses are compatible with most Panavision accessories and are optimized for ⅔ inch digital cinematography.

All of these lenses were designed or re-engineered to Panavision specifications and offer superior mechanical and optical performance as well as expanded, easy to read focus and aperture scales.

Standard Primes - SP

First debuted in the late 60s, the Panavision Standard Primes are the oldest spherical lenses in our line. Typical to lenses of that era, the older coatings produce more flaring and veiling glare artifacts.

Available in focal lengths ranging from 8mm to 150mm, the lens speeds vary from T2 to T4 with close focus distances from 14 inches to 5 feet. This series includes two 8mm wide angle lenses – a Nikon Fisheye and a Distortion.

Super Speeds - SS & Ultra Speeds - US

The Super and Ultra Speeds from the mid-1970s provide higher performance and faster apertures than the Standards. Super Speeds offer focal lengths from 14mm to 150mm, with the lens speeds from T1.1 to T2 and close focus distances from 2 feet to 5 feet. Ultra Speeds come in focal lengths from 14mm to 150mm, with lens speeds from T1 to T1.9 and close focus distances from 2 feet to 5 feet.

Super Speeds “Z” Series - SZ & Ultra Speeds “Z” Series – USZ

Introduced in the 1980s, the Z series combines Zeiss optics with Panavision mechanics. These lenses offer performance comparable to other Zeiss primes of that era. The Super Speed Z lenses' focal lengths range from 14mm to 180mm, with lens speeds from T1.9 to T2 and close focus distances from 2 feet to 5 feet. The Ultra Speed Z lens focal lengths range from 14mm to 180mm, with lens speeds from T1.3 to T2.8 and close focus distances from 2 feet to 5 feet.

Spherical Telephoto Zoom - STZ

The Spherical Telephoto Zoom is a 70-200mm, T3.1 zoom lens with a close focus distance of 4¾ feet. Compact and lightweight at 6 pounds and approximately 8½ inches in length, the STZ has the same 4.440 inch front diameter as the Primo® primes.

This zoom combines high contrast and resolution, even field illumination, and minimal optical aberrations. Modern coating technology provides minimal veiling glare, ghosting, and reflections. With great flexibility and excellent imaging performance, this lens is suitable for both zooming and as a variable prime at fixed focal lengths. The STZ maintains a constant aperture at all zoom and focus positions.

Lightweight Zooms

Panavision's lightweight zooms are ideal for Steadicam shots or for handheld use with any of the Panavision 35mm cameras, especially the Millennium® XL2 or the Lightweight.

Lightweight Zoom 1 – LWZ1

The LWZ-1 is a T2.8 lens with a focal length range of 27-68mm and a close focus distance of 3 feet. The lens weighs 2 pounds without the zoom motor (3 pounds with motor attached). At 5 inches length with a diameter of 3½ inches, the lens comes with five complementary 72mm filters.

Lightweight Zoom 2 – LWZ2

The LWZ-2 – a T2.8 lens with a focal length range of 17.5-34mm and a close focus distance of 1½ feet – weighs less than 1½ pounds. With an overall length of 4 inches and diameter of 3½ inches, the LWZ2 accepts stackable 77mm front filters.

Lightweight Zoom 3 – LWZ3

The LWZ-3 – a T4 lens with a focal length range of 85-200mm and a close focus distance of 4 feet – weighs 2½ pounds without the zoom motor (3½ pounds with motor attached). It has an overall length of 6½ inches at infinity focus with a diameter of 4 inches and is compatible with 60mm front filters.

Cooke/Panavision Zoom – Z5S

This Panavised version of the Cooke 20-100mm zoom is a T3.1 lens with a close focus distance of 2½ feet.

Cooke/Panavision Super Panazoom® – Z10S/ZC10

The Panavised version of the Cooke 20-250mm zoom is a T4 lens with a close focus distance of 2½ feet.

Angenieux/Panavision Zoom – Z6S

The Panavised version of the Angenieux 20-120mm zoom is a T3 lens with a close focus distance of 3½ feet.

Canon/Panavision Zoom – VFL4X

Panavision has totally re-engineered this Canon varifocal lens to serve as a full-featured motion picture zoom lens. The Panavised version of the Canon 150-600mm zoom lens is T6.3 lens with a close focus distance of 10 feet. With its fully integrated Primo Zoom® mechanical technology, the VFL4X offers superior mechanically stability and precision. While primarily intended for exterior shots, the long focal lengths and close focus capability makes it a frequent choice for interior commercial shooting.

The Panavision® Primo Anamorphic Prime lenses bring the superior imaging characteristics of Primo spherical prime lenses to the anamorphic format. Like their spherical counterparts, the Primo Anamorphic Primes deliver high contrast and resolution, even field illumination, and negligible veiling glare, ghosting, and distortion. With their consistent color balancing between focal lengths they intercut seamlessly with other lenses in the Primo anamorphic line. One of the key characteristics of the Primo anamorphic lenses is their ability to reproduce the frequently desirable blue anamorphic flare without introducing unwanted veiling glare.

Primo Anamorphic Prime lenses derive from a blend of Primo lenses matched to a modified version of the E series cylindrical lens layout. They have a maximum aperture of T2 and come in 35mm, 40mm, 50mm, 75mm, and 100mm focal lengths. The “Regular” Anamorphic Primes have close focus distances ranging from 2 feet 6 inches to 4 feet 6 inches, while the “close focus” lenses offer close focusing distances ranging from 2 feet 6 inches to 2 feet 9 inches.

Every Primo Anamorphic Prime features multi-layer coatings and linear irises. The Primo anamorphics are larger and heavier than any other series of Panavision anamorphic lenses and are not ideal for handheld or Steadicam applications. Used primarily as an "A" lens for use with dollies and traditional studio set ups, the Primo Anamorphic Primes cut in well with the other Panavision anamorphic lenses to give cinematographers the tools to realize their vision.

Macro Lenses SM Series

These lenses matched the Primo® Primes for color and performance. The focal lengths in this series of lenses ranges from 50mm to 200mm with maximum apertures ranging from T1.4 for the 50mm lens to T4 for the 200mm lens. Close focus distances range from 9 inches to 27 inches. The 90mm macro focuses through normal magnification ratios to macro (1:1) and down to micro. (Micro magnification is where the image on the film or sensor is larger than life-size.)

Panavision® Frazier Lens System - FLS

The Frazier Lens System features a unique “swivel tip” that enables smooth panning, tilting, Dutch Head movements, and rotation about the optical axis (both through 360º, with unlimited global orientation) for a wide range of taking lenses. Requiring just a simple turn of a follow-focus type knob, the FLS produces a continual image rotation centered about the optical axis (through 360º) while the camera system remains stationary.

Combined with a wide angle taking lens, the FLS can also deliver extreme depth of field to produce unusual shots of in-focus objects placed anywhere from macro to infinity distances. The physical shape and movements provided by the system resolve the lighting difficulties usually associated with close focus/macro objects. Other features include internal filtration (glass and/or gels, manual infinitely adjustable polarizer) and the acceptance of bellow-less perspective control and slant focus lenses for the most unusual shots.

The system covers the Super 35mm format with a maximum aperture of T7.1 and features dual focus and T-stop scales.

Special Purpose Lenses and Optical Accessories

Since 1954, Panavision has built many customer-requested spherical and anamorphic lenses – primes, zooms, projection/printer optics, etc. We can create a special purpose, one-of-a-kind lens to meet your specific requirements.

6mm T2.8 Fisheye Lens - SF6

This lens covers the Super 35mm format and fits on all Panaflex 35mm cameras. It has a close focus distance of 1 foot 6 inches with a more than 180-degree field of view. The lens accepts one internal 40.5mm glass filter and up to two gels, or one manually rotatable 40.5mm glass filter.

6mm T3.5 Nikon Fisheye Lens - SPN6

This lens covers the TV safe action format only and fits on all Panaflex 35mm cameras. It has a close focus distance of 10 feet 6 inches and a 200 degree field of view. The lens accepts one internal 40.5mm glass filter.

Inclining / Low-angle Prism - IP3

A low angle prism allows you to shoot only a few inches from the floor. For proper results, the widest spherical lens should be a 21mm and the widest anamorphic a 35mm C Series or G Series. The Prism effects is a ¼-stop loss.

1.4x Primo Extender - 1.4XE & 2x Lens Extender – 2XE

These extenders mount between the lens and the camera to increase the focal length range of the lens. The 1.4x extender imposes a 1-stop loss, while the 2x extender effects a 2-stop loss.

Series 2000 Century Precision Periscope - CV35II/CPPS2T

Designed for superb rendering of miniatures and tabletop shots, the Century Precision Periscope works well in a variety other shooting situations. The periscope, which is a T4, provides improved image quality, good field illumination, and reduced field curvature. The iris of the periscope gives you the control needed to minimize vignetting. The Periscope works with most Panavision lenses, has its own aperture readings, and works with standard follow focus units.

Innovision Probe II - IVP2

The Probe II provides excellent optics and enables shooting from a very low perspective. Its high resolution glass elements provide excellent sharpness and great depth of field. The Probe II features 40.5mm drop-in filtration and comes in six focal lengths: 9mm, 12mm, 16mm, 20mm, 32mm, and 40mm. The Probe II also includes a 45-degree prism attachment for the 16mm, 20mm, and 32mm lenses. The small diameter primes are ideal for tight spaces and macro magnification.

After 60 years of setting industry standards for film optics and cameras, Panavision has stepped forward to set the standard for lenses specifically designed for digital cameras. Built on the same glass element as Panavision's Primo Primes, the Primo V lenses bring the classic qualities of the Primos to digital cinematography while taking advantage of the optical clarity and production convenience of the digital format.

Patent-pending modifications on the Primo V eliminate coma, astigmatism (vertical and horizontal focus differences), and other aberrations caused by the extra layers of glass in digital cameras. The image from a Primo V has sharper corners, a flatter field, and exhibits greater balance from center to edge than lenses that are not optimized for digital capture. At the same time, the characteristics of the classic Primos serve to counter the hyper-sharpness often associated with digital capture.

Primo V lenses are compatible with any digital camera equipped with PL or Panavision 35 mount systems. The Primo V lenses retain the essential Primo character so you can seamlessly intercut imagery from Primo V and standard Primo lenses. And since the internal transports and mechanics of the Primo V lenses retain the familiar Primo feel, DPs and camera operators face very little learning curve.

Primo V lenses come in focal lengths of 14.5mm, 17.5mm, 21mm, 27mm, 35mm, 40mm, 50mm, 75mm, and 100mm, with widest apertures of 1.9 and close focus distance of 24 inches for all lengths.

Panavision’s Academy Award winning series of Primo Prime lenses combine high contrast and resolution, even field illumination, and negligible veiling glare, ghosting, and distortion. Primo lenses intercut seamlessly with other lenses in the Primo line, and are designed for use with film and digital cameras.

The standard (SL) series of Primo Prime lenses include focal lengths ranging from 10mm to 150mm with widest apertures of T1.9. Close focusing distances range from 2 feet to 5 feet 9 inches. All Primo Primes are compatible with the 1.4x Primo Extender which reduces your exposure by a full stop.

Primo Close Focus Lenses

Panavision offers a set of close focus prime lenses ranging from 14.5mm to 35mm, with widest apertures of T1.9 and close focusing distances ranging from 7 ½ inches to 11 inches. This can translate to close focus of 2 inches or less from the front of the lens. The Primo Close Focus 14.5mm is compatible with a Wide Angle Adapter to create an 11.5mm wide-angle lens.

Panavision’s Academy Award winning series of Primo Prime lenses combine high contrast and resolution, even field illumination, and negligible veiling glare, ghosting, and distortion. The standard (SL) series of Primo Prime lenses include focal lengths ranging from 10mm to 150mm with widest apertures of T1.9. Close focusing distances range from 2 feet to 5 feet 9 inches. All Primo Primes are compatible with the 1.4x Primo Extender which reduces your exposure by a full stop.

The Primo Compact Zoom offers high performance in a conveniently small package. At 8 inches in length, the PCZ is T2.8 with a focal length range of 19-90 mm. Advanced design and use of aspheric surfaces enable high optical performance with an extended focal range and well-controlled breathing. The PCZ maintains a constant aperture at all zoom and focus positions, with continuous close focusing to 2 1/4 feet.

The SLZ delivers minimal breathing when focusing at short focal lengths. The 3:1 Primo Zoom is a high speed, high performance telephoto zoom with an aperture of T2.8 and a focal length range of 135-420mm. The lens maintains a constant aperture at all zoom and focus positions. The SLZ3 has continuous close focusing to macro 1:7 with a minimum distance of 8 feet with minimal breathing when focusing at short focal lengths (135mm-200mm). The optional Primo 1.4x extender converts this lens to a 190-590mm, T4 lens with a 1:5 macro magnification and close focus distance of 8 feet 7 inches.
