PureVent 2.0 is a radical new approach to cleaning the gas vented from engine crankcases by using centrifugal separation technology to remove oil mist and other particles, and help protect the environment.

An estimated 3500 m3 of lube oil ends in the world's oceans every year by allowing crankcase gas containing oil mist from marine diesel engines to pass into the atmosphere un-cleaned. This oil mist can drift long distances in aerosol form before the droplets finally settle on the sea – or on land, with the pollution this entails.

Although there are stringent regulations regarding oil discharges in bilge water, there are – as yet – no limitations on oil discharges into the sea via crankcase ventilation. Exhaust emissions from such engines are normally the prime concern, but crankcase gas still represents important environmental and health concerns. Crankcase gas is much less diluted and can cause high oil concentrations in limited areas. The oil mist can also soil a ship's engine spaces, decks and areas near the ventilation outlet. This is highly undesirable on board cruise ships, for example.

PureVent 2.0 represents a radical new approach to the cleaning of crankcase gas in high-capacity installations. Developed specifically for use with marine diesel engines and power plant generators, PureVent technology employs high-speed centrifugal separation to separate oil mist and other particles from the crankcase gas produced by these engines. The separated oil can even be re-circulated for use as lubricant.

Cleaning efficiency is as high as 99.99% for a capacity of 40 m3/hour and 98.5% at 150 m3/hour. These performance values cannot be matched by any previous technology – traditional cyclones, air traps and filters have never been able to provide satisfactory results.

The AlfaPure range comprises purpose-built centrifugal separator systems for removing oil, grease and solid particles from water and oil based liquids, such as coolants, lubricants and wash liquids.

Efficient cleaning of service fluids pays off
Utilizing centrifugal separation, the AlfaPure range is a series of extremely efficient systems for cleaning industrial service fluids, such as coolants, wash liquids and mineral oils. Removing oil, grease or particles from these fluids makes them last much longer and reduces machine tool wear, leading, in turn, to increased uptime in your plant. It also results in cleaner, healthier working conditions in the workplace.

Longer service life for fluids
Continuous cleaning extends the life of wash liquids by up to six times, while coolants can be made to last as long as ten years, with dramatic savings in replacement costs. The costs of disposing of contaminated liquids and filters are also greatly reduced.

Extremely efficient cleaning

Centrifugal separation is the most efficient method available of cleaning service fluids. It removes water, abrasive metal fines and other particles as small as 2 μm, therefore machine tools give much longer service before wearing out. This means considerably lower tool replacement costs. Reduced tool wear also results in more precise machining and fewer rejects.

Complete system design
AlfaPure systems are built around centrifugal separators. Each system is a complete plug-and-play module, including separator, feed pump, sludge pump and an easy-to-operate control panel, a PLC control system that handles all valve and pump settings automatically. Normally installed in a bypass system, the unit operates continuously without interrupting machinery operations. This also means no plant redesign is needed

The Alfa Laval OFX 20 disc stack centrifuge system is specially designed to provide the oil industry with a highly efficient way to remove water and solids from heavy crude oil.

Interest in exploiting reserves of heavy crude oil is accelerating worldwide. However, processing such crude so it meets with pipeline specifications has traditionally been a costly, time-consuming process featuring extremely large, static vessels and the use of lots of heat and chemical demulsifiers.

The Alfa Laval OFX 20 disc stack centrifuge system is designed to provide a rapid, highly efficient way to remove water and solids from heavy crude oil in order to deliver consistent, refinery-spec oil downstream. Achieving such separation using centrifugal force rather than heat energy provides key benefits in terms of environmental profile and CO2 emissions. Removing as much water as possible before the oil is transported also paves the way to substantial logistics savings.

This fully functional modular installation is delivered on an offshore skid complete with all the necessary equipment, piping, instruments, valves and controls. This innovative solution is equally effective for both onshore and offshore installations, including drilling platforms and FPSOs. However, the high throughput and space-saving design of the Alfa Laval OFX 20 system provide particular benefits for offshore facilities, where space and weight are at a premium.

The design configuration features only a minimum of components as well as extensive use of abrasion-resistant materials. This helps minimize downtime, as well as greatly reducing inventory requirements and maintenance costs.

The OX20 centrifuge system can process a wide spectrum of crude oil types (with specifications down to 11.5 API) as well as considerable variations in composition. OX20 systems can be configured to comply with Zone 1/Class 1 Div 1 specifications and also with ATEX Zone 1 and 2 regulations. A conversion kit is also available so the same equipment can also be used for removing oil and solids from contaminated water, ensuring that it can be discharged responsibly.

The Emmie.2 mobile centrifugal separator system makes it easy and affordable to undertake highly effective cleaning of virtually any kind of service oil, including hydraulic and lubricating oil, compressor and gear oil, cutting oil and diesel oil. This system is the ideal way to clean oils used in relatively small installations because it is easy to move to wherever it is needed, as and when the need arises.
The Emmie.2 is a complete compact system that includes a disc stack centrifuge separator, feed pump and a PLC-based control system that makes it very easy to operate. The unit is installed in the bypass flow, so that no alterations to existing machinery are needed. Hooking it up is simple and straightforward, providing "plug-and-play" operation. The system works automatically and requires no supervision once started.
The Alfa Laval disc stack separator at the heart of the Emmie.2 system provide rapid, effective and continuous three-phase separation of water and particles, all at the same time. This system removes more than 99% of all solid particles 2–5 µm in size, and virtually all of the water – but none of the additives. It effectively removes any airborne dust, as well as particles that stem from wear on paint, metal, plastic or rubber. It also removes any water present, thus helping prevent key oil additives from oxidizing or decomposing.
Prolonging the service life of service oils increases uptime, reduces wear on equipment and cuts back on costs – to the extent that this compact go-anywhere separator normally pays for itself in less than a year.

PureDry is a fully automated, modular system designed to treat waste oils onboard ships and in power plants. The system separates the waste oil into three phases: cleaned oil, water and super-dry solids.

Compact modular design
The compact PureDry system comprises a pumping module with emulsifier dosing unit, a heating module, a separation module and a control unit. Its modular design provides flexibility for installation in any convenient location and makes it easy to integrate with existing onboard systems.
Reliable operation
The uniquely simple separator design ensures easy, reliable operation. The system separates the waste oil into three phases: cleaned oil, super-dry solids which can be disposed of as dry waste, and water clean enough to be sent to the bilge system. Smart automation adapts the process control to varying feed conditions. There is no water consumption and no additional waste generated.
Substantial savings on waste oil handling
PureDry cuts the cost of waste oil and solids handling by removing the maximum amount of water from the waste oil and concentrating the solids to super-dry sludge (typically 5-15 kg/24 h), thus eliminating oily waste and related disposal costs.
The efficiency of the system in terms of drying up oily waste streams means holding tank volumes for waste oil and waste water can be reduced, thus freeing up valuable space on board a ship or in a power plant.
Furthermore, waste fuel recovery is possible when FO waste are separated from LO waste (separate waste oil tanks) – fuel saving up to 2 % is possible.
Maintenance and service by Exchange
PureDry is supplied with an Exchange Kit, which includes a new separator insert (rotor and disc stack), a new XCavator, and a consumables kit. After one year, the crew replaces the separator insert as simply as replacing the insert in a filter, also replacing the XCavator. The used parts are returned to the nearest Alfa Laval Service Center, and the ship orders new Kits.
Integrated waste oil/bilge water treatment concept
In combination with Alfa Laval’s PureBilge system, PureDry forms a complete, integrated waste oil/bilge water treatment solution that can dry up all oily waste streams on the ship or in the power plant. PureDry separates out the oil, concentrates the solids to super-dry sludge which can be landed as dry waste, and sends the water to the bilge system. PureBilge then takes care of the fine polishing of the oily water prior to discharge overboard.

PureBilge is a fully automated centrifugal bilge water treatment system that cleans oily wastewater onboard vessels at sea. By effectively removing marine oil pollution, it makes bilge water safe for discharge overboard.

This reliable single-stage high-speed centrifugal separation system effectively cleans large bilge water volumes at sea as well as ashore without the use of chemicals, adsorption filter or membranes.
Cleaning efficiency
PureBilge generally achieves an oil-in-water content of less than 5 ppm. Performance has been proven under real-life operating conditions and is unaffected by sea heave, oil shocks or high solids loading.
Superior separation performance
PureBilge features a patented XLrator disc inlet, which gently accelerates the bilge water as it enters the separator bowl. This prevents the splitting of oil droplets and the formation of additional emulsions, which gives PureBilge a substantial edge over other centrifugal separation systems.

Certified according to IMO resolutions, MEPC.107 (49) and US Coast Guard document 46 CFR 106.50, PureBilge is designed for unmanned 24/7 operation.
No man-hours are required for operation or supervision. There’s also no reject to pump ashore and no need to transport land wastes such as filter elements, coalescence elements, active carbon, or flocculation deposits. This contributes to reduced operating costs.

The Alfa Laval Phoenix treatment system for contaminated water is an extremely versatile, modular process solution whose elements can be combined to meet many different needs.

When installed this ensures that it is able to efficiently treat virtually all kinds of oily, contaminated water from any offshore oil and gas operation.
Offshore rigs and production platforms – as well as other installations and vessels used in the oil and gas industry – operate with complex mixtures of oil, water and solids, often in large volumes. Most conventional technologies are incapable of effectively splitting the kinds of stable emulsions often found in mud contaminated oily waste water, or of removing suspended colloidal particles.
These complex streams of contaminated water vary considerably in composition and physical properties. However on a drilling rig, they almost always contain both hydrocarbon residues and solid particles – ranging from coarse to extremely fine. These mixtures are often in the form of complex emulsions that are difficult for traditional separation systems to tackle.

The emmie comprises a trolley-mounted centrifugal separator and electrical oil heater for use on ships. Moved between marine hydraulic systems, it removes water and 99% of all 2-5 μm particles from oil, increasing oil service life and system reliability.

Increase marine hydraulic system reliability
The Alfa Laval emmie is a portable marine hydraulic oil cleaning system that effectively cleans hydraulic oil, removing both 99% of all 2 - 5 μm particles and 100% of the free water from oil used in hydraulic systems onboard ships. It meets the requirements for hydraulic oil cleaning in accordance to ISO Cleanliness Code 4406:1999 13/11/8.
Designed for use in systems such as CP propellers, steering gear and other marine hydraulic machinery, the emmie consists of a disc-stack centrifugal separator, which can operate in purifier mode and clarifier mode, and an electrical oil heater. By prolonging the service life of marine hydraulic oils, the emmie increases uptime, minimizes wear on maritime hydraulic equipment and reduces costs. In doing so, this portable ship hydraulic oil cleaning system generally pays for itself in less than a year.

Easy-to-use ship hydraulic oil cleaning system
Lightweight and compact, the Alfa Laval emmie is easy to use and does not require any alterations to marine hydraulic machinery. Connecting the emmie to a hydraulic oil tank takes just a few minutes. Then simply start the separator, start the pump and, after the oil flows through, start the heater. With its straightforward plug-and-play operation, the emmie mobile marine hydraulic oil cleaning system cleans the oil at a flow rate of 80 - 120 l/h. No supervision is required once the system has started.

Extended service lifetime
The Alfa Laval emmie effectively removes any water, airborne dust and particles from wear on paint, metal, plastic or rubber from marine hydraulic oils. By removing water from the oil, the emmie prevents system corrosion as well as oxidation and subsequent decomposition of oil additives, which reduce oil service lifetime. This not only prolongs the service lifetime of marine hydraulic oil, but also reduces oil consumption and costs.
In addition, by removing the particles from the oil, the emmie prolongs the service lifetime of hydraulic systems. Cleaner oils translate into more uptime – with fewer unscheduled production stops and fewer breakdowns due to solid particles that cause wear on parts and can clog equipment.
