Downdraft tables are workstations with a flat, porous surface, that uses a vacuum system to capture particulate, smoke, fumes, or debris. This dust particulate or fumes are siphoned into a filtration area, where the air is usually run through cartridge filters. The collected dust is deposited in a hopper for disposal, and the cleaned air is recirculated to the facility. Downdraft tables and downdraft booths are commonly used in woodworking, metalworking, grinding, finishing, sanding, deburring, welding, plasma cutting, industrial painting, and other applications.

Fume extractors are important because they help protect the health of employees. Many industries use these extractors to eliminate harmful particles from jobs such as welding, soldering, and other applications where noxious smoke is produced. How does fume extraction work? Fume extractors use specialized filters to remove particles from the air and reduce the harmful effects. Hence, fume extractors are a necessity for certain types of jobs and industries. Fume extractors come in a variety of types that can be either welding systems, fixed systems, source capture, and portable.

Baghouses are highly efficient industrial dust collectors that use numerous woven or felt bags to filter dust-laden air. The dirty air enters the baghouse compartment, where it is drawn through cylindrical tubes where the bag filters remove up to 99% of particulate matter. Clean air exits the baghouse back into the workspace. When the bag filter is too dirty for air to pass through, a cleaning cycle begins, and the dust is shaken off the filter into a receptacle area. The filtering process begins again. Baghouses are generally classified by the filter cleaning method they use. One advantage of baghouse dust collectors is the filtering material they use can withstand high temperatures.

Cartridge collectors filter a wide range of particulates and dust form industrial workspaces. This type of dust collector may be used in laboratories, pharma, agricultural, food processing, metalworking, or other manufacturing facilities. IN a cartridge dust collection system, air is moved to a dust collection unit, where the dust passes through cylindrical or triagonal cartridges. These cartridges are wrapped in pleated filtering media, where dust is extracted from the workspace air. The pleated material offers a greater filtering area than a flat surface bag of the same diameter. Cartridge dust collectors can be single-use or continuous duty. In single-use cartridge dust collectors, the dirty filters are changed out and accumulated dust disposed of when the machine is off. With continuous duty dust collection systems, on-line filter cleaning is facilitated by pulse-jet technology.

Cyclone dust collectors are ideal for production applications with a large dust load, high temperature, and product recovery. The cyclone dust collection system uses centrifugal force to separate dust particles from the air. An air intake moves dirty air at an angle into the cyclone chamber, where the dust particles hit a helix-shaped baffle, and then the cylinder wall. Centrifugal force drops the heavy particles to the bottom of the unit. Smaller particles may be filtered out by a smaller vortex. Clean air passes back out through an outlet valve.

Mist eliminators are designed to remove vapor and other liquids that are contained in air or gas streams produced during manufacturing or industrial processes. When molecules and very small droplets of liquid are trapped in air or gas, this is known as entrainment. Removing liquid contaminants from industrial exhaust streams prevents corrosion of equipment, improves plant emissions, prevents slippery floors, reduces worker health risks, and improves overall product integrity. Some of the types of liquid contaminants that may be removed from process gas include oil mist, mist from machine coolant, aerosols, and mist from chromic or sulfuric acid. Mist eliminators may be designed to remove entrained droplets from 3mm to less than 1 µm in size.

Wet dust collectors, also known as wet scrubbers, remove particulates from the air by mixing water and air at high speed. This humidification process encapsulates larger particles in water droplets, and agglomerates smaller dust particles, increasing the bulk of the dust particles. This makes collection of the dust particulate easier. The cleaned air passes usually passes through a demisting filter to remove water vapor from the air. The solid materials taken from the air settle at the bottom of the tank and are removed by various methods. Wet scrubbers are particularly effective for removing combustible metal dust through wet collection.
